there's a huge amount of brainwashing that goes into the diamond industry. also a lot of anti-free-market activity, such as DeBeers withholding product from market to keep the price up.

the "2 month salary guideline" = Madison Avenue brainwashing.

i thought Steve Jobs' choice of engagement ring was interesting. he paid $250K for a ring at Gump's in San Francisco. i guess for him that was the 2-hour salary guideline.

Be careful, especially if you 'convinced' your GF away from diamonds... That may come back to bite you later when she decides it isn't what she wants anymore. It isn't a coincidence that diamonds are the main stone in 95% of engagement rings.

Yes they do...but by buying a good quality lab-created stone, he's not out nearly as much when she finally hits him with the reality stick...

The whole point of the engagement ring is to show a (financial) commitment to her so she's willing to sleep with you before the wedding. If you could get a perfect 2 ct diamond for $5 it wouldn't mean anything.

It's not about the stone, it's the investment (in her) that it represents.

At least that's what all the conspiracy sites say.
