Sounds like a scam. Even now the 1gb and 512mb models are fairly close together up until you get into the very highest resolutions. This sounds a lot like when a crappy GeForce FX5200 has 512mb of ram; forcing the card to use that much basically guaranteed a crappy frame rate.
it's not forcing it to use more memory, the reason why cards with more memory then they need tend to underperform is because they use slower memory to keep costs down(either higher latency or lower frequency)

No I mean people think that just because you can fit stuff in memory means it automatically runs faster or fast enough. My dad thinks like this. My computer is slow as shit? Don't worry I'll add more memory. Forget quad core, I'll just add more memory.
Having lots of memory does not mean the card is faster. If you can find a game that uses more than 1gb of dedicated video memory, I'll bet my balls that a Radeon 4870 will not be able to run it.
I'm comparing this to the 512mb FX5200 because it's basically the same thing. At the time that was released, the most graphics intense game was Doom 3 which used about 500mb of video memory because the Ultra setting used uncompressed textures. What do you think happens if you try running Doom 3 on an FX5200, simply because it has enough memory? It will still run like garbage because it doesn't have the processing power to use all of those uncompressed textures loaded into memory.
According to fud 2GB GTX 285s will be hitting the market soon as well. It will be interesting to see the benefits on both cards with the increased RAM.
Will 2GB be standard on next gen and 1GB be the 512mb of this generation?
I hope at the very least that >512mb becomes standard for the upper mid-range (260, 4870) up to the high end (295, 4870x2). For the lower ranges there's no point in >512 since most people would be playing at lower resolutions anyway.
I'm thinking about getting a 2560x1600 LCD in the near future... has there been any company to release a 2 GB card yet? I'd like to see some benchies. I remember back in the day Asus usually would release a monster card with tons of ram even if there wasn't a reference board for it. Or is this what Sapphire is doing now?
