STUART Despite low poll numbers, Rick Santorum isnt changing his focus, continuing to campaign as the hero of the far right.
At a campaign stop at Community Christian Academy in Stuart on Tuesday, a woman asked Santorum why her gay son doesnt have the same rights as a heterosexual.
Everybody in America should have the same rights, and I would agree with that, Santorum said. Everyone in America should have rights that are endowed to them by the Creator, those are unalienable rights. And your son, just like everyone else here, has those unalienable rights.
But, Santorum said, There are certain things that government does that gives people privileges in order to promote activity that are healthy for society and are best for society. And those things we promote would give people advantages or benefits, government benefits because we think that is healthy activity. Mothers and fathers coming together, forming healthy marriages, having children and raising those children. Every American child has the right, and the government should support the right to have and know their mother and father and be raised by their mother and father.
At stops in Okeechobee, Stuart and Punta Gorda, Santorum continuously said that hes the only consistent conservative in the race.
He even criticized his own family still living in Italy, saying, all of my family, all of my grandmothers relatives, they still live in Italy, they never came. When I go back and visit them they are nothing like my grandparents, my parents and my relatives here. They are very, very happy being ruled. They are very happy having a welfare state, a European Socialist state. Its what they know.
Santorum called President Obama, King George III reincarnated, saying Obama wants to tell Americans what they can and cannot do.
Santorum criticized what he perceived as Obamas war on the wealthy, saying Mr. President, youre the president of 100 percent of America, not 99 percent of America.
Santorum said America will become the British, relying on government health care. He warned that the Tea Party will be deflated if they nominate Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich, saying they are not true conservatives.
Of Gingrich and Romneys support of the 2008 government Wall Street bailout, Santorum said, When everyone was panicking, they jumped in and panicked.
Santorum blamed the media for focusing on Gingrich and Romney, saying he didnt receive fair time in Mondays debate. I thought I was going to start selling popcorn at some point, Santorum said in Okeechobee.
Many of the people who came out to hear Santorum speak said they prefer him to Romney and Gingrich but arent sure he can win.
Santorum disagreed, telling the Palm Beach Post, Obviously a lot of people do think I can win. We won Iowa and this race is a long way from being over.
