This has prolly been asked many many times .. but sorry I CBA & had a few vodka + ginger ales .. :whiste:

I want to rebuild a new compy .. my current AMD Phenom X3 8650, 4GB DDR2-800 & GTS-450 OC is showing its age. I am going to hand down this comp to my nieces & nephew, or to my parents.

I'll be mainly for WoW, minecraft, LoL .. and various other games, some video editing/production (FRAPS & Vegas). I don't plan on OCing the rig .. but I do have the Hyper 212+ CPU cooler for it too.

I also don't plan on doing any SLI or X-Fire with gfx cards, but I do want to use my Creative X-Fi Titanium PCI-e sound card. I'm thinking of going with a HD 6850, or HD 6870 .. maybe GTX 550i or 560i.

Yep, 3570K for sure. No overclock just seals the deal. As a matter of fact, if you're never going to overclock it, why not see if your vendor has a deal on the 3550? If it's $10 cheaper, well $10 is $10 you don't need to spend.

Then again, something else to consider, used 2600K is in that price range, and if you're video encoding, 2600K >>>> 3570K. Or regular i7-2600 non-K, that way you know it wasn't overclocked to the limits by some maniac.

If on air/water..I'd go for 2500K.Much broader range of overclocking on air/water.
i.e Ivy Bridge cpu miight get up to 5 Ghz.
Whereas Sandy bridge might go up to 5.4 or more.

Or more realistically, Ivy will get 4.5 and Sandy will get 4.8. The 4.5ghz Ivy will perform like a 4.8ghz Sandy and draw less power.

If you don't plan to OC go Ivy, if you do plan to OC stay far far away from Ivy. A 4.3ghz Ivy will perform like a 4.4ghz sandy.

Thanks all!!

I think I'll go Ivy 2500k .. so if I want to OC, nothing crazy, just a nice stable boost .. prolly 4.3~4.5 range.

Hmmm :colbert:.. a pre-owned i7-2600k .. now that's a good idea. I'll keep that in mind.

Here are the #'s to grease a quantitative decision.

I forgot about the CPU bench tests on this site .. thanks!
