Sandy Bridge Pentiums/Celerons are strong CPU's

Nothing to laugh at...

Just pieced together my new HTPC (Replacing my E350 system, did everything fine except Netflix HD (didnt know) and light gaming (did know).

Much happier.

This system can play Battlefield 3 on High settings at 1360x768 (My TV Resolution) great...

Not bad for $68.00

For everyday computers, these things rock.

I've decided I am no longer forking over thousands of dollars for PC Gaming. This point forward, I'm a budget Gamer and I still enjoy it just as much. My E-peen may have shrunk (sold my 2500k, 580 rig last month), but I'm still happy 🙂

personally speaking i dont like the SB pentiums/celerons
the celerons by n large are single cores.. this is 2012 single cores arent around anymore for a reason. the SB pentiums are worse than a 1136 or 1156 dual core cpu and probably about even with a phenom II x2 or athlon II x3. in fact i wouldnt be suprised if it lost to the athlon II x4 641

Entirely agreed. The G530 Celeron has become my go-to CPU for 'daily driver' type rigs since I reviewed it in the buyer's guide a couple months ago. I personally would rather use a system for everyday tasks that had a G530 + SSD than an i3-2100 + HDD, which is what the cost differential between those two chips allows.

No they aren't. There's one single core Celeron, two dual core Celerons, and all of the Pentiums are duals.

Why on earth would you even think of comparing <$80 budget parts with the highest-end 1336 platform? Of course they're worse. That's like saying you don't like $20k Fords because they aren't as good as $50k+ Audis - total apples to oranges. And no, you can see from that comparison that the G620 is even with the low-end 1156 Core i3. You are right that the G620 is roughly equivalent with a PhIIX2/AIIX3 - while costing less and using a lot less juice.

Remember, I paid $120 for the CPU and Motherboard.

I also love the new Celerons for budget PC's... However I would NOT use one for a build that plays BF3! Yes it 'can' run the game, just not very well... At least on the larger maps... Now that you mention it, I really have to give it a try running a smaller 16 or 32 player map  But lets keep this in context, BF3 is either THE most demanding, or in the top couple most demanding games available in Jan 2012... Any other game plays smooth as butter (haven't tried Skyrim)

This is very much capable of BF3... just not at highest settings. "Light gamer"

After getting into distributed computing a bit, my dream IVB SKU that we won't get is a G620 like CPU:

4 Cores
~2.8Ghz+
~4MB L2
65W
Sub $100

I would build a couple of folders around that, no problem. I am very happy with the G620 in my WHS box (even stuck at 1.6Ghz!) but want more cores for the crunching/folding in the same power envelope.

Budget gaming FTW!

Any ol used 3.2GHz core2duo (E6x50 or E8xxx) system is faster and cheaper than the G620.

You wrote that! Sweet! :awe:

I did like the eye-opening comparison to those low end Llano processors. I don't usually dig into those buyer guides (I like to roll solo like that 😛 ) but that was a really good article IMHO.

Really? I wonder about that, especially if we figure in one years worth of power consumption. And I can't sort "by any ol' used" at NewEgg or Microcenter which makes that a nearly impossible recommendation to friends and family. My sort must be broken 😛

Can I put that E8xxx into a Z68 board for RST? There is more to it than just speed today.

Yes I have a G620 in a Z68, before you ask. IVB next year sometime is the plan 😉

sorry but a G620 does not look all that impressive to me. even an old E8400 is faster overall so I certainly would not build anything but a basic pc around one.

There are alot more options for budget systems versus high end. You figure high end - you are looking at 3960x. 2700k, or Xeon equivalents.

Budget - low end SB, older intel, AMD Athlons, APUs, on board graphics, low end discrete.

I built an HTPC a couple days ago that runs Win8 pre beta (see sig). It boots up in 10s, streams Netflix HD content flawlessly.

Eh the G620 is faster in most of the AT Benches.
well after looking more closely, they are basically tied overall. the E8400 is already getting a bit weak for some modern games and will limit any modern upper mid range card or better. you can also easily oc the E8400 by 30-40% thus making it way better in every benchmark and increasing its already small lead in gaming. so again I would not build anything but a basic pc around a G620.

Agreed, a basic PC can be built around the G530/G620... Basic meaning casual encoding, casual gaming (not BF3, Batman or Skyrim), HTPC use, they're great... But lets not make them do something they're not designed for ()🙂

Also, how come we're comparing E8400 to a G620?

E8400:
Recommended Customer Price
$163 - $179

G620:
Recommended Customer Price
$64

lol, you know there is an edit button? I was only mentioning the E8400 because it was a decent cpu at one time but now is a bit too sluggish for a few games or pushing an upper mid range gpu. the G620 is even slower and cant be oced so again, its a cpu that only makes sense to me for a fairly entry level pc.
