Sandy Bridge is the current craze, what is next?

I, probably like most of you, won't be upgrading my/your Bloomfield or Lynnfield chips anytime soon. This morning I just got the bug to look into SandyBridge, just out of curiosity. While it seems like something kick-ass to jump into, my current system and credit card debt is not allowing it. My systems still being my bright-light in restrain against my urge. Reading the overclocking potential of 32nm is a force against restraint to recon with, 4.4Ghz "easily" on air while 4.6-4.8 obtainable? I like to keep my overclocks mild for several reasons like longevity of the system, data integrity, power consumption but jesus! So while my debts are being paid and my systems are ripping along till the next latest and greatest, what is everyone talking about that being?

Thanks

The next sandybridge cpu (not sure if new codename), i think, is the same chip without the GPU on die. Its suppose to run a lot cooler (good for O/c) and be cheaper.

That is the enthusiast cheap I believe lots our waiting for. Suppose to be out later this year.

Current ones "can" get to 5ghz on air..if i recall. Not sure if that's normal though. :p

Not to worry..if your running an X58 mobo and i7 9** with a good VC..your so there anyway!

At the very least don't get too excited until ya see the results on the LGA2011/X68 hopefully this Q4..then the real changes in the pc.

BTRY, if you don't have your OS+Apps on an SSD yet then that is the very next upgrade you should be looking at.

I put my Q6600 @3.3GHz on a $400 160GB G2 and the rig became so damn zippy and quick that I actually undid the OC and just run the CPU at stock 2.4GHz now (not kidding).

I meant what beyond SandyBridge is everyone looking at.

Bulldozer from AMD is probably the next "big" thing on everyone's minds just because it is such an unknown at this point.

After that I suppose it will be Haswell (Intel's new 22nm architecture that is post-Ivy).

Like most people, I'm hoping Bulldozer delivers. Not because I'm an AMD fan, just because competition keeps these fast CPU's cheap for us all. :)

My current CPU should hold up for the next two years. i7-9xx + SSD's make upgrading not really necessary for 99% of most folks, I bet.

That's going to be crazy exciting! :)

Yes but things may change, i dont think they have even started planning rockwell yet, i think haswell is only just starting. IvyBridge at 22nm should release LATE this year or early next year as the tock and haswell will be the smaller tick in 2012-2013.

Thank you :)

AMD's bulldozer, then ivybridge which will be a die shrunk sandybridge, then perhaps AMD will have a refresh of bulldozer not sure what it would be called and then later intels replacement for sandy bridge which is called haswell.

I started looking at the Vertex 3 review on the front page. After not really understanding how those benchmarks pertain to real world performance and then skimming over the prices I recited one of my "army" against upgrade affirmations: "I love my SSD drive" lol :D

Yes, I know :) I have two SSD drives. I originally bought the SF 1500 controlled 100g Vertex LE drives by OCZ - one died and i got a Vertex 2 replacement. I think it was one of the newer drives not using refurbished parts. It's when I noticed that there was a difference in the product numbers between the same Vertex 2 SSD drives, cause i was going to upgrade the Firmware to the latest and on the OCZ forums there was a inconsistency in which firmware went to what OCZ product numbers. I contacted one of the forum moderators and I think that's when they decided to do a revamp on their product numbers, so you can all blame me for it, lol. But I still have the one Vertex 100g LE drives and I have the Vertex 2 wiped out and ready for install for the next rotation of boot drives on my main rig. I decided just to go full HDD one the game rig - put a bunch of games on it (WD 1tb Black, would of preferred a F3 but I had the WD layin around for a while)

BD will be my next logical step provided it delivers well.

probably gonna do graphics card(s) when bf3 comes out later this year. might switch things up and go green if they let sli happen on BD but i doubt it

Will Haswell be a big architectural change or is that too early to speculate on?

AMD's Bulldozer should be interesting. I just hope it doesn't end up being another Barcelona.

After we come to the point of "hello" to Moore's Law there will be the power-consumption frontier being the big challenge in the spotlight (not that it isn't now but just sayin)

AMDs Bulldozer architecture, not the soon to be released Orochi die but the architectures potential, bag of tricks and evolution.

Hows SSD work in raid 0 after 6 months . I have my new internet machine all done as far as parts the only thing left is the Z /M/B. I almost went SSD . But bought 4 raptors instead and pci-e card. SSD sounds great but I not sold on it at all. I have been using on present internet Pc 2 raptors in raid O now for 6 years not a hitch very pleased with the raptors. 4 raptors in raid 0 are as fast as a fresh SSD. Its more money but I old so don't care.

No TRIM in RAID...so...

Besides I went from RAID 0 to a single SSD..and it was a MAJOR speed improvement.

How many drives in raid 0 did you use . With 4 raptors and raid 0 its actually faster than SSDs. Use a bit more power but This Pc were discussing will likely be highly o/ced IGP. 1.7ghz+ Thats why I want Z if I ruin IGP than I can go to AMD/ATI card . Might even buy NV so I can back talk on NV drivers like others here say they do with ATI/AMD.
