Sandra Bullock Gives $1 Million to Haiti Relief

Sandra Bullock said Friday she donated $1 million toward Haitian earthquake relief, and Madonna announced she gave $250,000 toward the effort as celebrity aid continued to pour into the devestated country.
Bullock's contribution went to Doctors Without Borders' emergency operations in Port-Au-Prince, where three of the organization's existing facilities were damaged by the magnitude 7.0 quake.
"I wanted to ensure that my donation would be used immediately to meet the needs of the Haitian people affected by this catastrophic event," said Bullock in a statement.
Madonna's gift was to Partners In Health, a longtime medical provider in Haiti.
"I urge all of my friends and fans around the world to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can," she said. "We must act now."

Good. I know lots of people will roll their eyes at these donations, celebrities showing off etc etc, but it's money going to a worth cause. If I had the kind of money they had I probably would give a large donation too, for the same reason other people donate 20 or 100 dollars, because they want to help.
 
I didnt know Sandra Bullock had a million free dollars. I thought she was relatively low-paid these days.

Quite the contrary, I believe. She also produces and is into several other things. I think she's rolling in it. Not quite a julia roberts but maybe half.

She's pretty bankable. Over her career her movies have grossed as much or more than actresses like Streep and Roberts.
 
She should offer $1 million in relief to people who have had to sit through her movies.

All kidding aside, it's good to see celebrities offering up large charitable donations like this. It's sad that it takes a natural disaster to prompt it, since Haiti clearly could have used the money even if there had been no earthquake, but it's better than nothing.

Why do people keep acting like giving Haiti more money before the earthquake would make a difference?

Until you get their corrupt ass government out of power, nothing will change over there.

Over 40% of their annual budget is made of foreign donations. Does anyone even try to account for how these 'donations' were spent? Over $1B of their 'debt' was forgiven last year by the IMF/World Bank. Where did all of that money go?

It is sad the citizens of Haiti are paying a very terrible price for the greed and corruption of their government officials.

Did anyone see pics of the Presidential 'palace' which collapsed from the quake? yet nearly 2M people who live in poverty (living on less than $2 a day) in shanty towns there.

The Blind Side was actually pretty good.

I hope by "announcing" that she gave the million it makes others in Hollywood want to keep up with her.
 
She made a lot of money the past year but considering her career was in the suck for years as well, and that there is no guarantee her career won't go back in the sh!tter anytime, this is a helluva contribution compared to most celebrities.

I suppose it depends on what you're into. I liked julia roberts in "erin brockovich" and bullock in "crash" a lot. Bullock has produced a lot of crap though. She's crying all the way to the bank.

And buildings falling down because of a lack of building codes is not? What about reports of people destroying food aid because it is "poison"? And what of the bodies used as blockades against aid workers because "aid workers were slow to respond"?
