SanDisk USB reader doesn't work at all with new Abit BF6

I got an Abit BF6 motherboard a while back to replace my aging BX6.

Well now my SanDisk USB (digital camera memory card reader) doesn't work!

Windows detects it and installs the drivers, the light blinks when I put a memory card in, but the drive doesn't show up in Windows and I can't access it.

Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

Reinstall drivers and reboot. I had a problem until I did this a few times (on an Abit BX6 R2). Try it a few times and you should be fine permanently from there...

Also make sure that the reader is plugged in before the computer is turned on... that could be your problem, too.

that shouldn't matter as it's an usb device.
are you giving the reader enough time to show up in my computer or explorer after it's connected? leave it for a minute & click for screen refresh & see if it appears!

i've also had problems with the sandisk CF reader. I used it successfully on my last computer, then installed it in my new machine, along with the microsoft intellimouse optical mouse, and a generic hub. THe other devices work fine, but when I try to move larger quantities of information (ie digital images) it will crash all of my usb devices halfway and in fact will render the untransfered images unreadable. I have uninstalled all of the USB devices, then tried reinstalling the CF card reader, no problem. THe problem only comes when I try to transfer digital images. ANy ideas? Im using a VIA VT83C572,VT82C586 controller with win98. could the via controller possibly be related?

try installing the drivers BEFORE you plug in the card reader it wont work if you install the drivers if the reader is already connected to the usb port

Punch the compact flash reader very hard, follow up by hitting your computer

Finish the move by throwing the flash reader away

Honestly if you have no other problems with USB devices I would have to assume that this is a problem with the San Disk unit and not your motherboard. I would seriously call San disk and see if they have a known fix of this issue, or check their knowledge base online.

trust me, i am about to punch my sandisk reader. But seriously, i was just using this very same reader on my last computer with no problems, so I suspect that the cf reader is not the source of the problem. Also, when I hook up my digital camera directly to my USB port (ie bypassing the sandisk reader), the usb devices again fail, so I feel that it is a problem with the usb drivers or the VIA PCI to USB controller. Updating the drivers from VIA's website didn't help either. I have read that VIA has really crappy controllers.

I may not try to mess with this too much more - I might just buy a PCI USB card which is non-VIA based. I had such a card in my previous system and I never had problems with file transfers.

thanks

<--never knew the bf6 was a VIA based board

as far as the other devices, usb mice work on almost anything no matter what, as do hubs, well the hubs work however connecting multiple devices to them does not, I work on win95b machines all day and trust me USB is virtually non-existant on those machines.

if your having problems with your camera also then you are most likely right in suspecting that it is a driver/os/usb port issue.

if you bought the board new then I would try exchanging it first, if not try getting another usb device that is known to work that taxes a system like a scanner and see how that responds on your system, try it in both the hub and direct connect.

Good luck, I have worked with a san disk once and they are a pain.

My son had the same problem with his computer and it was the Adaptec CDR software causing the problem. Upgrade the software and your problems will go away. Adaptecs new 5.0 version of the software is pretty nice. This is a known problem as reported by Sandisk.

i decided to scrap my board's usb ports and I installed a belkin 2 port usb PCI card. installation took 2 seconds and was flawless. No problems at all with transferring large amounts of data. I will never use USB with VIA chipset anytime in the near future. check www.usbman.com for PCI usb card reviews.

I'm having the same trouble with my SanDisk cf card reader and my new T-bird. The card reader works in my laptop, and my PIII 500. Found this on Microslop Knowledge Base:
SYMPTOMS
Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices that are connected to a Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer may not work if the following hardware components are installed on the computer:

An AMD processor (running at 350 MHz or faster)
A VIA Technologies USB controller
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because there is a timing-specific problem in the Universal Host Controller driver (Uhcd.sys) that may prevent USB devices from be properly enumerated under specific timing conditions.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, download and run the appropriate file for your language version of Windows.

I did as I was told, and still didn't help. The machine locks up if you try to access the card reader, and won't boot with it plugged in. Edit: all my other USB devices (scanner, mouse) work. Have got the latest driver from SanDisk. Forgot what 4in1 I have.
Here's the link

so your board has a via chipset for usb? This will work fine for low-throughput devices like mice and keyboards, but not for high-throughput devices like scanners and CF readers. just abandon ship and buy a pci usb card...NON- VIA!! Check usbman.com for good pci cards. Trust me, it's $30 well spent -- will save you a LOT of headaches and anger.

I had a BSOD problem with my USB ImageMate whenever I tried to install it. The next time I reinstalled Win ME, the only thing I installed before the ImageMate were my video card drivers. Windows recognized the reader, installed it, and I haven't had any problems since.

If you're running Adaptec EZCD with a version lower than 4.02S, make sure you get the patch from Roxio to fix issues with the ImageMate.

Hey it works with my scanner, and the scanner transfers data lots faster than my old parallel port scanner did! The Asus board has VIA chipset-guess that means Via USB chip? Is VIA bad? It should work as advertised, but then again, I guess it's like I'm glad I don't have to drive a Microsoft car...If no other solutions-guess I'll see if I can find a place for another card in the system (slot, interrupt, etc.)

Stripe-
go into control panels\system\device manager\usb controller.
if it says VIA anywhere, then it's a VIA usb controller...which sucks. get a card with an opti or lucent chipset if you can't easily solve the current problem with 4-in-1 drivers or EZCD patch.

It's VIA...I'll try the Roxio (dumb name, or maybe someone needs to explain it to me - like some one had to explain all your base (see link)) site again to see if they have fixed their FTP. If that doesn't work, i'll order a usb card.ALL YOUR BASE BELONG TO ME video
