Buy.com hasn't died away yet, as some expected a few months ago. These folks put up some good deals (including, sometimes, their "price mistake of the day"), but you have to look around to find them. Here's an example I ran into: linklette

This USB reader is a great device. I've used one for more than a year in conjunction with our Nikon Coolpix camera--itself a pretty fantastic device. This reader treats a compact flash card as just another storage unit on your PC (or, I suppose, Mac). I have never seen it anywhere near this cheap. You say you have? Well prove it. :frown:

Staples has these:
PNY CF reader: $20
Sandisk CF reader: $25

use in-store coupon card (I got one mailed in by Staples) -$10.

Any suggestions: Which one is better?

MrMet: I'm under Windows XP right now, and my ole ImageMate does file copies in both directions just fine. Are you on one of those Via chipset machines that have USB glitches? Our second PC is one of those, and I have SanDisk reader problems there under Win98SE.

badluck: I don't know Type I from Type II, but I have several makes of CompactFlash cards, including Nikon's 8MB that came with the camera. All work the same.

CF Type I is the small card that fits in your camera/MP3 player/PDA. CF Type II is the PC card size that fits into the PCMCIA slot on a Notebook. BTW, you can buy Type I to Type II adaptors for less than $10.00, and transfer your photos to a Laptop with ease. (if you have one)

This is what the adaptor looks like.

I like the looks (cosmetics) of the PNY better... anyone reading this who has used the PNY?
The only thing I know about PNY is that they seem to never send rebates, but this doesn't
have one so I'm ok there.

I have one of these working fine in XP. It even has its own icon that looks just like the unit. :D

No, CF Type I and II are both small. Type I is the typical CF card that fits into a camera, PDA, etc. Type II is a little thicker (eg. IBM microdrive), but otherwise shares the same form factor. There are fewer devices that will accept a CF II card. Both will need an adapter to fit a PCMCIA slot.

Works perfect for me under Xp. Plug & play... I never installed the software that comes with it. I plug it and unplug it all the time. Xp always recognizes it and I have it set to open directly into the reader anytime I plug it in or insert a card.

For anyone near the Bayarea Fry's. They have the CF readers, (reads I and II) for 19.99 with a 10.00 mail in rebate. Sale is good until Tuesday the15th. Smart Media readers were 29.99 with no rebate. Too bad, I could have used an extra SM reader. I don't have a SKU but I could find it if anyone wants. It was posted in the 8 page Friday ads.

I also vouch for this reader. I have this same reader with Xp and an Intel P4 (No Via anything...Thank God) and it works like a charm. No drivers needed to be loaded. Plug it in.... use it. SIMPLE

You'll be glad you did, 2Crucial. I've convinced myself: this price is so good, and the ImageMate reader is so nice, that I'm ordering a second one. We'll carry it with the digital camera. That way we can download photos to any USB-supporting computer we encounter on trips, show the photos to family and friends, copy them off to whatever medium is available, reformat the compact flash card, and go on taking pictures.

Damnit I just bought one from Microcenter earlier this week $30. That's life I guess. This works just fine under WinXP. I do suggest though that you do not try to format it in XP.
