Now if only I could find a black internal one for this price to fill my 3.5" slot. The best price I've found is $50, so far, which sucks compared to the cheap external ones.

Well, I received my SanDisk USB 2.0 ImageMate reader today---and I can't get it to work. Plugged into a USB 2.0 PCI card, Windows XP recognized the device, installed the drivers, and reported four new removeable drive letters---but when you feed it a CompactFlash card, the drive letters all disappear, and the card cannot be found. Did a Windows System Restore and repeated the process with the same results. Unplugged my other USB 2.0 devices---no help. Didn't find any helpful info at the SanDisk website. Anyone else runnning into problems...?

YUP! I have a Dell 4500 and it installed fine and was very fast moving a tif file from my CF card. BUT! I can't reboot the computer. If it's attached I get a black screen with a flashing cursor. Unplug it and reboot and all is well. Dell was no help and SanDisk will send me a replacement when I ship this one to them on my dime! I'm getting angry.

Sys info:
Dell 4500 2.26GHz P4, BIOS A04, XP Pro.

Any other horror stories on this POS?
:disgust:

ktg & Joe221,

I got mine yesterday, and have not had any problems with it on any of my computers (older dell workstation & laptop with USB 1.1 and an Intel mobo USB 2.0 port). All my stuff is running 2k though, so maybe the problem is with xp drivers?

bliab, thanks for your input. There's some other posters over at fatw*llet who are having similar problems with this product on their Dell PC's running WinXP. Smells like a driver issue to me. Awaiting SanDisk's tech support reply.

KTG and Lizardboy over at FW have come up with a ROM Flash from Sandisk that has helped everyone who's used it BUT ME! Arghhhh. I still can't boot with it attached. :(
It's in the hot deals forum search "sandisk", but it's probably on the first page.

looks like the firmware update has helped a few people, myself include...here's the info:

This fix is in no way endorsed by Sandisk, it worked for me but there are no guarantees this will work for you. I am not responsible for any damage you do to your PC, yourself, etc, etc.

The reader should be plugged in before you start this.

1) Download this file
2) Unzip ShowLetter.zip to a folder
3) Double click on SETUP
4) After SETUP runs there should be a file on your desktop called 'ImageMate Download Tool'
5) Doubleclick on 'ImageMate Download Tool'
6) Here's a screenshot of what you should see
7) Click on 'ImageMate 6 in 1 Read/Writer=last1...' as seen in the screenshot
***Make sure you select the same .HEX file I have highlighted in the screenshot***
8) Now click on the DOWNLOAD button
9) The program will erase the old firmware on the reader and then install the new firmware, it will take a few minutes.
***Be patient, it takes a while for the firmware to upgrade***
10) Once the program has finished hit OK to exit the program, then reboot your computer.

After I did this the Reader worked fine. It's recognizing all my CF cards and is definitely running at USB 2.0. During the Firmware upgrade it seemed to hang once when Windows XP popped up one of those "New Hardware Found" messages. I just X'ed out the message and the program resumed.

For anyone wondering where this program came from, a tech support guy at SanDisk e-mailed it to KTG, he forwarded it on to me. The weird thing is, the tech told KTG to use the first .HEX file. We both tried that file and it didn't seem to make any difference. I decided to try the second .HEX file just to see what happened.

Good luck - hope this gets everyone up & running.

I've had the same problem plugging this unit into my USB 2.0 ports (using Gigabyte 7VRXP). Basically, the thing disconnects after a random period, all drive letters disappear, the led on the unit goes out, and Win2K gets mad, because a device was unplugged without stopping it...
It works excellent on USB 1.1 ports, however - so far it is rock solid stable.

So this new firmware is supposed to cure that? I feel a bit apprehensive, as it is not endorsed by SanDisk...
I think I'll wait until a few more brave people try this out...

BTW, SanDisk posted new drivers (ver. 1.1) on their site on 1/20/03, I'm giving them a try now, maybe there is no need for a firmware flash? Weird thing is, they say it is not needed for SP3, which I am running. Hmmm...

Well, damn the $20. I tried the new firmware, and it still does not work. What's worse, I think I lost the ability to read the Lexar 16MB CF cards - it reads the SanDisk 128MB CF just fine... I am not positive if it was this reader that was able to read them - I do have another one, but I am positive the Lexars cannot be read now in the SanDisk. Not a big loss, but still a bummer.

I hope they post a real fix soon, or there will be return hell for them.

Does USB 2.0 give any speed advantage for these readers anyway? I mean, SM is slow, CF is faster, but probably not much faster than 12Mbps.

Well, I received this thing yesterday, and I'm sorry I did, what a POS. It won't read my 256mg SimpleTech CF at all, the green light goes on, but if I go into Windows Explorer and click on the drive it just hangs forever. I'm running Win2K. I tried the built-in Windows drivers, the ones on the CD, the ones on the website, and the method posted by lizardboy. No go. I have an MMC and two memory sticks that work OK. The thing that really burns me is I had the Imation one that I bought from CompUSA for $59.99 that I returned when I saw this one. The Imation worked flawlessly even with all three different cards plugged in, was quite a bit smaller in size, and accepts IBM Microdrives. Who cares that this one was less than half the price if it doesn't work?

No more ScamDisk products for me... sheesh :disgust:
