I really can't compare to anything but my former Rio! Cali mp3 player. The Sansa is much better. The Sansa does everything I need. I use it with Audio Technica ATH-CK7 canalphones.
 
Not an audiophile, but I like mine. The problems I had with it were software ones, and those were fixed by installing rockbox.
 
Buy this + a 2GB or 4GB* microSD card + install RockBox = best mp3 player for the money.

*4GB microSD cards are HC (high capacity) and only work with RockBox (not original firmware).
 
you might want to get the fuze, the new version of sansas that are shorter but still have color screen and plays videos. i got a e280 not too long ago and right afterwards they had the fuze 8gb for $76 here, and i would've taken the fuze. obviously that sale is now over but that was a killer deal...
