SandForce using 25nm flash for SSDs

Am I reading correctly that all the satadimm does is save the space of a disk drive mounting slot and a molex/SATA power connector?

It seems the satadimm only draws power from the DIMM slot. It still needs to be connected externally to a SATA port like a regular drive.

Yes, it seems that is the case.

Personally, I would like it if they could do what they do for DRAM now, that is have a high performance controller on the motherboard or CPU and have sockets to put in more NAND. Although if they do this, it would really favor Intel and probably stifle competition.
