Ahh, so that's what Favre does in the offseason. Pretty cool.

Very cool. That's a lot of work for something that'll be gone in a day or 2.

I know next to nothing about sports so all I knew about Favre was that he was a big name in sports. Had to Google him. Wow they do look alike! Course both sort of look like Joe Everybody as well so that's not too surprising.

THAT'S a lot of work for something that the priests will pray over for 25 seconds and then sweep up like Rice Crispies. Some of them take days to make. The one pictured is not even so complex. Sand mandalas are fun!

Wiki has a good entry on them.

Thanks op. Great piece.

Yeah I've never seen one in person but Mandala's are amazing to look at even in photos or video!

Nice... I'd have a hard time designing one of those, and then dumping it in a river right away. I guess it's all part of the process :^)

Most Buddhist priests/monks will not allow them to be photographed.

Considering why they are made, and how often they are made, and how many people make them, it is likely some of the worlds greatest artwork has lasted little more than a few days and was never seen by more than a handful of people.

They are about what you get from them while making them. They are a form of meditation. The point of meditation is to let go of everything.

What planet do you live on where the entire beach gets wet at high tide?

Every one of those drawings (with the exception of the last one, obviously) would be partially or mostly erased after one day. If the sand is dense enough to carve into it, it'll be covered with one high tide. None of these drawings are in the soft, perma-dry sand.

I'm on Geno's side on this one.

You can see the tide washing away the art already by the time the guy gets a chance to photograph it.

Pretty, but I agree with the that's a lot of work for something that will be gone soon after its made crowd.

Oddly enough, I looked at one of those sand mandalas and envisioned a nice Cartesian robot doing an excellent job of creating one, to an accuracy of ±0.2mm. :D
