Moonbeam - I doubt that he wants to drive to L.A. to go to the beach. Santa Cruz is the closest nice beach to San Jose. There are not many "sandy" beaches unless you drive further south.

I lived in Hermosa Beach for about 2 years and I'm partial to the beach there. It's about 6 hours drive to Hermosa. I'll be making the drive this summer for the AVP Beach Vollyball tournament.

dmb: I don't think G_G meant that to be as an insult. Sometimes maps can explain geographical details more quickly and easily than people can (you know that saying a picture is worth a thousand words). Hell, that's what the internet is for. You can probably take one'a them virtual tour thingies on a beach around there.

Santa Cruz - roughly an hour on the crappiest freeway in the world. i hate driving 17.

Carmel/Monterey - nearly 2 hours. water is FREEZING. but nice place to go and lots of other stuff to do.

SF beaches - about an hour. all their beaches suck. no sand, cold water.

My friends and I usually go up to Half Moon Bay. Its prettier, cleaner, and many different areas of the beach to go on. We're usually in Montara but sometimes we'll stop a little earlier if its nicer and less busy. It takes maybe an hour to get there too, because of the road you have to take once you're off 280/101.

I agree, the closest beach is probably in Santa Cruz (being that I go to UCSC). I also agree that the beaches up here basically suck... really cold and stuff... I was told by my roommate (who surfs) that you need a "3/4" or something up here. Pismo Beach is really nice- just out of San Luis Obispo, but it'll take you a good 3-4 hours drive down the 101. I'm from LA so I'm partial to Newport and Huntington :) As for up hear, I heard some nice things about Sausalito, which is just over the Golden Gate- any word of that? Any nice beaches there?

bUnMaNGo:
sausalito doesn't have any beaches. it's a tourist destination on the bay. restaurants, stores and nice views is all that it is.

north of SF is stinson beach. it's nice but cold. nicer is the beach in santa cruz. no beaches are great swimming beaches but that doesn't mean that it's not fun to go to the beach.
