So, nobody else finds it at all disturbing that now game prices and development times are going to go up because they can't leave unused content or code in place for fear that modders might reenable it and change the experience in some way that might "offend" someone?

its all in planning. plan to not have that kind of material in the game, the time will take just as long.

Uh, no. When you're writing software, you plan for as many features as possible and cut them because they turn out stupid (as this one did) or pointless or you can't make them work properly.

yes, you cut them during planning. hence why its all about planning. you should know what can and can't be done, those kind of things. also, plan for the uninevitable.

Okay then, so we end up with every single game out there being EA-style prefab nothing-new-and-original drivel. A good game will start out with a list of 20-30 new, original features. As development goes along, due to testing and sometimes problems getting it to work PERIOD, all but a handful of those will be dropped. If you're going to plan "conservatively" as you say you should, you don't have that list of 20-30 new, original features. You have nothing, and you turn out a cookie-cutter game in record time.

I said nothing about making the game with no new features. But if you want a top selling game with the best crap thats available you dont want your programmers to throw in stuff that is exploitable and ruin your companies name. I never said cut features out. content yes

ANY disused part of code could potentially be reactivated in a way to "sexify" the game. This is the principle on which damn near all major modifications are based. Therefore, you can't have any unused code hanging around. An example will follow below.

if the code is unused by any feature of the game, why is it there? you want your game to get exploited? unless you purposely leave the code there to add your own mods later. then you run the risk of allowing hackers to find that exploit and well, exploit it

If the code is unused by any feature of the game, it's still there because you can't just highlight it and press delete. Chances are that it's referenced somewhere else. That requires editing more code somewhere else in the program - which requires more testing.

And what if, for some reason, you wanted to bring it back later on (i.e. in a patch - it's just buggy right now). Your patch would be much smaller if you left it in and just tweaked the binary a little.

Back in HS, I coded an attendance tracking system. LITERALLY 33% of the code is unused features. This is a small, simple program. Games are not small, simple programs.

Even without the porn mod, that game should proabably be rated Adult Only, in my opinion. I laugh while playing it but I think it's way too derogatory and 'wrong' for teenagers.

Sounds about right Ryan.

Hi

Rated M=17, Rated R=17. There is nothing more derogatory in that game vs other rated R movies. I'd like to see you justify that position. Do I really need to link to movies with similar content?

No argument there. There are many movies that I feel should have stricter ratings. I tend to agree with other parts of the world that violence and gore is worse than nudity and sex. Yes, I realize the GTA argument is based on sex/porn. My feelings are based on the violence in the game.
So you also believe violent rated R movies should receive rated X?

This game is NO worse than many R rated movies. What you're asking for would shake up the ENTIRE etnertainment industry.

Seriously, do you realized how many movies receive R for violence? Those flicks wouldn't make it to the big screen with X ratings. Think about the consequences of what your asking for...

A movie like Scarface? Yes. A movie that has some violence that is key to the plot, R is fine. GTA is a game that strives to be as violent and derogatory as possible. It's nothing but violence and illegal activity. I have no problems with these games being developed, so don't misunderstand my intentions. However, I do think they should be clearly marked as for adults only. If a parent still buys it for their kids, then it's their problem.

Also, before this, I was under the impression that M = AO. I don't see why there are two levels when there is only one year in between.
Adult only=never going to be made, unless it's done on a porn flick budget.

So you'd be OK with movies such as Scarface, Untouchables, <insert drug/mafia movie> Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, <insert quentin tarantino flick>, Saving Private Ryan, <insert just about all war movies> having NEVER been made because they would receive an X rating?

Do you realize "adults only" is the death knell of ratings, right?

edit: adding American Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal.

All of these are TOP rated movies. I'd hate to have never seen these made because of a BS rating system.

Maybe I'm wrong about scarface, but none of those other movies really pushed the limits of what was conventionally shown in mainstream movies the way GTA pushes the limits of what's shown in video games. A more apt analogy might be Clockwork Orange, which in fact did receive an X rating initially. Or Last Tango in Paris.
Clockwork Orange IMDB
Yeah, OK, but now *IS* rated R now, the uncut version no less. I'm comparing current ratings in movies with current ratings in games.

Never saw Last Tango in Paris.

In Hannibal it shows him grilling the dudes brain in the end. How much "more violent" do you want? Saving Private Ryan, realistic enough violence? WAAAAAAY more realistic than GTA.

The argument just doesn't hold when compared to movies.

I haven't seen it, but from what I've heard Eyes Wide Shut is all about orgies, and that was rated R.

Take2 has halted GTA:SA production, Rockstar is to produce an M-rated version now. This is just fscking ridiculous.

Link.

What little life was left in the industry isn't going to be left much longer.

Good analogy.
