If two manufacturers sells half of the smartphone is a duopoly to you, then yes. I disagree.

If you look at high-end devices, I'm sure that the situation looks a bit different (probably more dominated by Apple and Samsung), but smartphones overall?

Interesting graph. When Samsung was announcing their numbers you can see their marketshare declining. When they stopped announcing their numbers their marketshare suddenly increased. Either the analysts are wrong or Samsung did something completely unnatural in a market that is expanding rapidly...

By unnatural you must mean taking away sales from Motorola, HTC, SE, LG, and most of the other third party Android handset manufacturers. Prior to the One X, none of the other handset manufacturers had really made a phone worth getting compared to a Samsung model that was available at the time. Even now that HTC has something worthwhile, Samsung still has a competitive product in the GS3.

It even makes sense from the chart. The Other category remains about constant and Apple fluctuates within a range based on whether they've just released a new iPhone or not. Notice that it's the other Android handset manufacturers that are constantly shrinking.

Well lets not forget Nokia is shrinking quite a bit too thanks to the beta test that is WP7

Samsung is succeeding due to good build quality and excellent marketing. It's no surprise they are were they are now.

Apple needs to strike back, since Samsung is stealing their sexiness lol.. In serious, the next iPhone needs to be a big hit, not just a marginal upgrade like the 4S was. It's needed to put the focus on Apple again.

Do most people even really care what the phone looks like as long as its not ugly?

There's a whole laundry list of reasons that people wouldn't want to get the next iPhone that rank far higher than how it looks.

It'll be a big hit for sure.

Honestly I don't see how people think the SGS3 is a sexy device. Its all plastic and the rounded corners are fat. If the iPhone5 posted above is real, I think that's a sexier device. Almost no plastic, all glass, brushed metal, and a gunmetal steel band.

I think the HTC One X is a sexier device that all of the above.

Apple removing glass from the back panel of the next iPhone is a step in the right direction, though. That served no purpose besides providing a nice smooth surface for your iPhone 4/4s to slide off onto the floor, where it shatters on one or both sides.

The SG3 is definitely plasticky and not the "sexiest" out of those 3 pictured. However it has a 4.8" screen compared to the 4S' 3.5" while also packing a signifcant punch inside compared to the iphone while also being LIGHTER.

If people care so much about the look and so called sexiness of their cell phones these days, why would you want to own the same phone that everyone else owns? Yeah I get that tragically the cell phone has turned into some fashion status symbol but if you think about it, let's say your a female...do you want to own the same handbag that's the chic thing to own if every other girl had the same bag? I don't follow the logic how the iphone isn't played out in people's eyes especially if it hasn't changed it's look since the 4 and it doesn't look like it'll change much for the 5.

Maybe I'm too old and I just don't get it. And I'll also say that I agree that the iphone is probably the best looking phone out of the 3 pictured above. Looks wise I really liked my white 4S. Functionality wise I rank it far below my SG3. Functionality won over looks. Damn maybe I'm just not cool.

"Plasticky" usually means more durable and lighter. These are good things with phones. No way in hell would I buy a phone with glass on both side.

They also apparently sold off their spinning hard disk division to Seagate for ~$1.4 billion, but they only received half of that in cash. Kind of a bummer there for me personally, since I've been buying Samsung branded HDDs for a while now because they've been more reliable for me than other brands. Might also explain why they've been priced so low.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

They were really aggressive with pricing and great quality drives :(

Right...the SG3 feels extremely light and comfortable in my hands and is not only lighter than the iphone but also slimmer. Because of the size and comfort I sold my tablet and decided not to buy a kindle for my e-reader needs after I bought my SG3. I have an aftermarket case on my phone like I did with my iphone so it doesn't really matter to me what the phone is made out of or what the external looks like. If looks really matter that much to someone, to each their own however.

Plastics are more durable and lighter, but I'd still go for the metal/glass. The same reason I'd go for a metal tablet and metal laptop vs its plastic counterparts.

Plastics are great for drops, but not for normal wear/tear. My iPhone and MBP is pretty old and its holding up great to normal wear/tear. Its only when you drop it is when it goes down the crapper.

Looking forward to seeing the Q3 results. The GSIII was just the first part of samsung's 1,2 punch, with the Note 2 coming in around August. Apple just can't catch a break
Apple and Samsung are not in a zero-sum game. Why do you assume a Note 2 would have any substantial effect on Apple's sales? IMO, iPhone and Note are so far from each other in form factor and feature set that someone who would like to buy a Note 2 will not buy an iPhone anyway - they'll go for the original Note, or possibly GIII or Nexus if they don't care about the stylus.

Normal wear and tear? Apple's aluminum and glass are prone to dings, dents, scruffs and scratches as much (or more so) than plastic is. The reason you think plastic is bad is because Apple used notoriously shitty plastic on their Macbooks. Good luck finding one that doesn't have cracked hinges, cracked palm rests, scuffs and scratches all over the outer shell, etc.

I never owned a plastic macbook because they are shitty. I owned a Dell laptop, which was plastic. That did not hold up to normal wear/tear at all. Same with my HTC diamond, all plastic shit.

Gorilla glass is pretty scratch resistant. Metal is pretty resistant to handling wear and glass trackpads never wear out. You'll see plastic have shiny spots like someone took some sandpaper to it. Plus plastic creaks like a rusty gate.

My plastic MB fared much better than my plastic Dell Inspiron.
