I looking to buy a 46" LCD and am undecided between two - Sharp LC-46D64U & Samsung LN-46A550.

I have a pretty well lighted room and am going to use it primarily for watching movies and Sports ( in other words not much gaming ).

Any help in deciding would be great ! Any other better recommendations in the same price range( ~$1600 )?

The A550 is a 2008 model and the D64 is a 2007. Both have Matte screens, so the lighting difference is moot. The Samsung has a fantastic picture, and I helped wall mount my dad's 46A550, so Im fairly familiar with the TV.

Basically, I think the Samsung is a runaway favorite in this duel, even if you picked a comparable sharp that is actually a 2008 model, Sharps history of banding problems with lower backlight levels worries me, and personally of all the 2008 TV's Samsungs have been my favorites, followed by the Toshiba lineup, with Sony in the "if only their prices weren't nuts I might consider them" category.

Banding problems are way overblown, I have the D62U 52" which is quite similar to the D64, very little "brightness bands" can be noticed (only if you stand about 20 ft away watching solid color changes

I'd easily go with the Samsung as pointed out, because it is a 2008 model.
D64/D62 don't fare too well in dark scenes but look great for bright movies.

I ordered the Samsung LN-32A330 (I think), this year's model series 3. The reviews were good and the price was great. Under 600. I definately want a bigger HDTV but I plan on moving in a few months and it will primarily be used for gaming. The price dif between last years Samsungs and this years is huge. I beleive the Samsung LN-46A550 is in the same series.

I'd vote for the Samsung. I just picked up (literally, last night!) the 46A750 (same panel as the A650, just more features) and just out of the box, the picture was amazing. I'm only running standard def Cable right now and it handles that pretty well; however, that was due to my old 27" Sony CRT unexpectedly blowing out Friday morning after ~15 years of service (RIP). I can't wait to pick up the HD boxes later and properly calibrate the screen; should be a sploogefest, even without Cinemax. Both DVD and Wii are amazing. I was looking at the Sharp and the Samsung at Best Buy, and I just kept coming back to this one. Pictures looked slightly more detailed and fluid, and if you feel like the AMP (motion compensation) feature on the Samsung makes things leap out of the screen.

lol I would vote for the sharp, due to that we have both 32" sharp and the 32" samsung in different but very bright rooms 3+ rooms

The samsung dose look better but my parents tend to like the sharp better, ill ask my dad why so when he gets home

Hope that helps
