Samsung SV5000 International VCR Problem (HELP!)

Hi Guys,

I bought this VCR for my mom on Valentines day.

The problem: Output from VCR (menus, tapes) doesnt show on the TV screen. TV stations keep playing no matter what the VCR does. This is how I set the whole thing up:

Cable box -----(coaxial)----->{{VCR INPUT | VCR OUTPUT}}------(coaxial)------->TV UNPUT

Please note that:

1) I can watch cable on my television, which means there IS connectivity.
2) The VCR does play tapes, because If I use this setup:

Cable Box ---(coax)--->{SamsungVCR}---(RCA Audio/Video Cable)-->{my old VCR}---(coax)--->TV

I can see the setup menus and tape output from the Samsung VCR, when I select "line in" option from my old VCR.

However, I dont want my old VCR in this setup. I just want to be able to use the Samsung as my primary VCR. My TV does NOT have RCA input, just Coax.

So what do I do to fix my problem? Please help, I dont want to have to return the VCR only to find out I made some stupid mistake....

Update: Just got off the phone with Samsung tech support. They have "no tech support info" on this model!!!! Bastards.

However, they said that it sounds like I need to press the "tv/vcr" button on the VCR remote control. Unfortunately there is no such button! However, it sounds like the source of the problem, just need to switch the output from Antenna to Tape.... Any idea on how I can do that?

REDICULOUS!!! It seems that the TV on/off function is not available on the remote, just in the Menu-> installation. Of course, its a catch22 because you cannot select any option from a menu unless you SEE it on your TV screen. I was able to get the menu seen by connecting the Samsung to a second VCR using RCA cable.

Bottom line: If your TV doesnt have RCA input connector (mine just has coax), and you dont have a second VCR, there is no way to set up the Samsung!!! Talk about engineering defecit.....


I am really angry, I hope someone here can tell me Im wrong, because i feel seriously ripped off (Why is there no warning on the box that a TV with RCA input is strongly recommended -- they did put this warning in user manual tho).

That's strange, my new Samsung VR9160 is not that way. I have no trouble with any of the things you mention. Though I found out that if I want stereo sound I have to use RCA cables.
