Samsung Spinpoint or Hitachi Deskstar

I am looking at getting one sata hard drive now (80 or 160) and then another at a later date for raid-0.

Between the Samsung and the Hitachi, what do you recommend? The hitachis have the best access time from what I have read. But I have also seen good things about the samsungs.

As far as noise and performance, convince me one way or the other.

Hitachi

Thanks

I like my Hitachi, but they do make a strange sound that sounds like a cat's meow every so often.
It has something to do with moving the heads so they don't sit in the same place for too long.

Samsung Spinpoint drives are Silent PC Reviews' benchmark drives for quietness and performance.

'Nuff said.

They are updated deskstars that have a feature to move the head once in awhile to stop the deathstar syndrome. I just found out what it sounds like. I will not be getting one.

edit, link stopped working... new one posted by generous benefactor!

Samsung it is!

Thanks for the replies!

you can here it for yourself: http://www.envynews.com/forums/inde...opic=5999&st=15 The first post has the link to the 5 second mp3.

Link no work and I'm curious if it sounds like my Hitachi's. I'll have to disable the case fans cause they usually drown out the noise my hard drive makes.

This link should work for the MP3 of the sound. Frankly, it sounds pretty damn eerie the first time I heard it. I'm putting an order for a 120GB Spinpoint 🙂

I guess it all comes down to the individual drive... I don't want to risk getting one that makes that noise.

I may not even get a hard drive now. Trying to get an x800.

I have it in a built to be quiet computer...it happens like once every half hour...not very loud at all, ppl are over doing the sound.
The noise is an option which moves the head if it is stationary too long. It helps with drive life, durability and prevent data corruption. (so the sound does not happen when you work)
Besides that innovative feature...the drive is fast, and very quiet.

Oh and i just listened to it and it is way louder than it actually is...pending your speaker volume.
and the creator slowed the sound to make it more apparent...it is milleseconds long and i didnt even notice it till it was pointed out.
ver few ppl even know about the noise...

personally i had an AWFUL experience with spinpoint80. things were good when it was working fine, but it croaked all of a sudden and took all my cherished data with it. i know it happens to drives from all different manufacturers, but i barely used it for 3 months when that happened to me! they gave me a replacement and whoa, the replacement was rattling like CRAZY - never seen, heard, ate anything like that in my life. it literally turned my keyboard into a force-feedback keyboard and my fingers would fall asleep from all that vibration. in the end the second replacement sorted the problem out but it did leave a bitter taste in my mouth...
