My son just got one of these two weeks ago, a great phone for the price. The offer varies by region, but in Maryland it requires a two yr contract. We are in a rural area and Verizon from past experience has the better cell coverage in our area.

The phone has a regular price of $179.99 -$100.00 instant savings -$50 MIR = $29.99. Plus the phone comes with the following free accessories, earboom headset, vehicle power adapter, belt clip and free activation. Tried the local Verizon store and they wanted $59 and no free accessories. My current contract ended Friday so I have decided to switch over to this deal also. Using the America's Choice 300 peak min + 4000 nites & weekends for $35/month.

Are you talking about its durability, or are you aware of some problems with it? If it is the later I would like to know what they are.

I've used ATT and Sprint in MD...for the past 5 years...I'm pretty unhappy with both so I went with this deal a few days ago. I don't mind the 2 year contract personally...theres really no where else for me to go except cingular or voicestream and I'd rather not go there in my area at least. Verizon is supposed to be the best in the MD/VA/DC area.

I've have used ATT and Cell One (now Cingular) and had very poor reception with both. I am in an area with a lot of hills, valleys and reservoirs where reception is difficult. Most of the people I know are using Verizon because the dropped conection zones are smaller.

I don't have the link on me but this phone is the number 4 ranked fone overall on cnet.com ...try a search there. I did a lot of research before finally going with verizon with this fone. Besides...30 dollars after rebate...I could just buy a different phone to replace it if I didnt like it and I could just sell the samsung.

Really? Are you making this decision based upon the picture or did u actually physically see it? I saw it compared to a nokia 8260 which is a pretty small phone and its only a little bit taller not including the antenna. The picture does make it look a little bigger than it really is.

This phone is quite thin and light. The pictures actually make it look larger and thicker than it really is. It might be a tad wider than most, but it is definitely on the thin side.

With standard battery the dimensions: 4.5" x 1.77" x 0.71"

hmmm,. i was just about to order the same exact plan and phone from verizon wireless, but i didn't see anything about a $50 MIR. Is that a samsung rebate? Or is it only for your area?

It is a pretty good phone. I got it for 200 bucks around 6 months ago. I didn't even know it existed, because verizon website didn't cary it for a while nor did the verizon store in NYC area, until I went to Radioshack and saw it(probably one of very few stores that carried it at that time). It's only recently this phone appeared on verizon's site. .. I loved it looks and it's menues etc. so I got it.

Update on Verizon e-mail responses. I sent e-mails to Verizon (Baltimore_Washington region) on 8/13 and another on 8/18. They advertise an 8 hour response to e-mails (normally). To date I have not received a response to either. Just sent another e-mail tonight. The first e-mail was an inquiry about this this special I posted.

It amazing how poorly some major companies respond to e-mail inquiries.

I ordered this exact phone and plan back on the 11th. Had the exact same problem with email inquiries. Got an email the 16th saying they had to increase processing time to 4-8 days but would upgrade my shipping to overnight. Eventually on the 22nd I called them, and after about 30 minutes of being on hold and transfered to 3 different locations I was told they needed a deposit from me. I authorized it and had my phone in less than 24 hours.

Verizon apparently outsources the online sales department or something. And let me tell you something...they ARE SLOW AS HELL... I spoke with a very unhelpful and rude girl name Kia who said there was only 10 people working in the online sales department and that they are extremely backed up. It took about 11 days for me to get my phone and I never had any emails replied back to me..(sent 2) and the hold times on the fone is rediculous..30mins to an hour.
They also did not send me my car charger or belt holster. Called and was told they were on backorder...

On a brighter note...the phone is awesome and the reception kicks sprints and ATT's butt in MD. If you don't mind crap customer service and waiting a bit longer for the fone, id jump on this.

If I'm not mistaken, that deal is only for new line of service. If you're just upgrading your phone or contract, you won't qualify for that deal.

That is correct...and if im not mistaken, there has rarely if ever been any cell fone deals posted that did not require a contract... most of these deals are for people who are looking to sign a new contract... but yeah 2 yr contracts arent too attractive for people. Anyways...it was a hot deal for me but I found out about it and ordered before this post.

I have been with Verizon wireless for over 2 years here in SE VA and IMO, no one around here comes close to the coverage they offer. The America's Choice 300 peak min + 4000 nites & weekends suits me just fine, and with nationwide long distance at no additional charge and NO ROAMING over a huge part of the country, it is hard to beat. I switched to it in March and it ended up costing the same as my old plan which had no long distance, roaming charges outside VA and less than half the minutes. This phone was not available at that time.

Reason I am "me too-ing" is that with a 2-year contract, I get a new phone every 2 years. I am sure there will be a limited number of phones to choose from 2 years hence, but my phone needs are pretty simple. I use it to talk on and have no use (at least currently) for one with all the frills.

FWIW, I know a LOT of people in this area who have switched from the wannabes to Verizon, but don't know of a single one who switched FROM Verizon. Sometimes "big IS better!" ;)

this phone is pretty nice for the price, i just got it as well from verizon
although i don't know if anyone noticed but the review is from october 2001, but the rankings are august 2002
anyway, one feature i don't like is that it can't have vibrate and ringer on at the same time...
games are kinda crappy, but that's not the sole purpose of a cell phone anyways
voice dialing is nice option, and yes it's kinda big compared to the nokia that shurato said
besides all of that, the best part is the reception that i get which is so much better than att in my area
you can get this phone if you're on a budget, but if not get the motorola v70 "it's not a bargain, but it sure is slick"

Any deal on its Data Cable? I would like to get one of these and also PCLink2000 software to manage contacts within phone. And I can use that occasionally for dial up using mobile phone. (Not express network though).

However, I heard that PCLink2000 does not work in Windows XP. And the price for those data cable and software are a little bit expensive.

Anybody came across good deal on those?

thanks

I'm thinking about gettin in on this deal. but i notice it doesn't have caller ID. ??? Is this true? Isn't that like a standard feature now in most cell phones now. ( i know you have to pay for the service to work too)

It has caller ID...100% positive. It's a great phone...probably the most satisfied i've been with a cell fone in the past 4 years ive owned one. only complaints is that the sound feels a little tinny or muffled unless you position it properly to your ear. There were times where i thought there was something wrong with the connection or the person on the other line to realize that i just had the fone incorrectly placed near the ear part.
