So, I bought me and my daughter an S5 some 4 years ago.. She has since moved on about a year ago to newer and better things.. Half a year ago my own S5 crapped out.. random reboots. Often. I simply switched over to my daughters abandoned S5.. and now.. random reboots all over the place.
I am so pissed at this product and its been growing at me for the last couple of years.. besides lag and sw errors and now the hardware. I know I am not supposed to use a smartphone for more than a year before getting with the train and upgrade but DAMNIT WT@.. I have to get a new phone now but it sure as hell wont be money I am throwing after samsung this time..
A phone that is built to last? Anyone? Nokia 3310?

Coverage issues near my house has me putting aside, maybe selling my Nokia 3200b. I may still carry it around though since we all know it can stop a bullet.

um why not hard reset, put new battery , etc.. i have galaxy s5's for 4+ years also and they still work fine. all of my old phones still work fine. Sure why not just buy a better phone you dont ever take photos? thats my question.. maybe you always carry a dslr so taking photos of your daughter isnt important?

I would normally agree with this but my note 4 is just damn slow and glitches even after a factory reset and new battery. Gets emm2 memory errors and shut down. And I kept it perfectly nice.

Most likely caused by the battery aging. Apple's solution was to throttle the CPU, so it doesn't cause reboots and crashing as the battery ages. Samsung's solution is apparently to leave the phone at full performance and let it crash. Pick your poison.

Until a better battery technology comes out or they start running phones on little nuclear reactors or something, you'll either have to replace the battery or replace the phone. Batteries don't last forever.

If you measure a voltage of basically any chemistry of battery and then put a load on it, the voltage will drop. With a weakened battery from age, that voltage may drop to levels that the phone can't remain powered on during some tasks.

Batterylife is fine though I usually get 2 days on a full charge.

We're not talking about battery life on a single charge based on your average usage, though.

We're talking about battery wear. This happens regardless of how you use the battery. Battery chemistries break down. They don't last forever. That wear down means less capability.

Consider for a moment those batteries are probably charged some 300+ times per year. That battery basically has an expected life of 2 to 3 years in that situation.

You might not be able to tell a huge difference from day to day through that progression of the wear down, but the electronics are sensitive to how much voltage they get and don't get.

The phone draws more power in a low signal situation (so it can keep the signal), downloading, running apps, etc. It could be any little thing on that phone that draws more amps which in turn brings the voltage down, and on those old batteries, might be bringing the voltage down too low and poof... reboot.

You said it's happening now on two separate S5s from 4+ years ago. Have you replaced the batteries? If it's rebooting, and you've never replaced the batteries, it's almost certainly the batteries.

well i dont know what to say to that. i tried to google emm2 memory error but dont think i got a single hit. not sure where it would tell you that kind of error your crash was from. And tried hard reset and new battery so yea i guess the phone went bad. still id try updating firmware new battery but actually would just throw the phone to the side and buy new one before investing more than 1 hour time into it.

hutchinsonJC didnt read my post few days ago suggesting new battery and hard reset i guess :p

Oh, I've moved past the note 4 long ago. Note 7,note 8,s8+ and s9+ have long replaced it. I gave to the wife but it was way too far gone at that point. She now uses my s8+.

I still use my S5 (7,500 MaH Anker battery), and my Note 4 (11,800 MaH TQTHL battery) daily. Both are still very useable, but I find my Note 4 to be a lot faster, but that is due to a lot of things.

Using their stock batteries, battery life becomes a joke.

Mine does the same thing. It reboots randomly at night meaning the alarm doesn't work (it did that this morning) and it's slow as crap. I'd like to upgrade, but I don't know if I trust Samsung.

A lot of Note 4's had a faulty eMMC chip. Google "MMC Brickbug". Have no idea if it applied to the S5 too. I recently sold my non-Brickbugged Note 4 for $250.

Funny. One ancient phone gets old, and you distrust an entire manufacturer. Do you do this with everything?

Have any of you S5 owners bought a new phone? I'm tempted to go get an S9+ or Pixel 2, but I don't know if I can justify it.

Sounds like the eMMC bug isnt on the N910C (Exynos)? But fortunately rooted users can 'fix' it.

As someone who still uses their S5 and Note 4, I say yes. I got a Note 8.

Only con I can say is battery life. Having a removable battery meant I could put in a battery 3x its original capacity. I now use a battery case which loses a lot of efficiency a normal battery has.

Speed is also a big thing. I can now play Minecraft at max settings at 60fps with an xbox controller. Note 4 couldn't.

Browsing the web is a bit faster, but the s5's 2GB of RAM hurts it a lot. My Note 4 is so much faster than my S5 in this area.

I also miss the small form factor of the s5. Even with my anker 7500 mah battery, it is easily used with 1 hand.

The other thing is if you root or not. My rooted Note 4 has a much newer OS than my locked s5. My Note 8 is not rooted so I find my note 4 far more capable in some areas.

I still prefer the note 4 over my note 8 but mainly because it has an 11,800 mah capacity over a 3300 mah + 10,000 wasteful battery case. Better aspect ratio, easier to hold, oh and easy user repairability. I seriously cannot mention how important a removable battery is. It is the best way for an old phone to last.

I use to have a S4, I think the plastic case is weak and it kept getting sim err's than the memory card kept resetting. To me, I felt the S4 flexed too much. Happened to my friends phone as well, I feel if you got over a year with an S4, you are damn lucky! I recycled mine a long time ago. What do you do? Sue samsung for not making it last longer. These days in age, your lucky to get 2-3 years, even tho, I think starting from the S6 and up, I think samsung got their crap together and started fixing the problems and it seems like mtbf rates has improved a lot. Shrug. Try and S6, S7 or S8. Or just go with the cheapest phone you can get, you can basically get new phones on cricket or any other carrier for free these days. They should last a year or more.
