Samsung NX10: new hybrid DLSR? Micro 4/3 competitor?

Anybody have info about this new product? DPreview had a nice preview, but I couldn't find much in the way of solid release dates or prices in the US. there are lots of nice features but of course those don't matter if performance is not up to par.

If the price is right, this could be a great competitor for the Panasonic lineup. That little prime lense looks great!

fry's had one charged up. automatic manual focus assist is a neat feature. what's really awesome is the amoled screen. it just looked better than any other screen i've used before. and i still can't get over how small it is. looks smaller than the EP1. yeah, the lens is bigger than the panasonic G1 but the body just makes it appear that much smaller.

also, the K-X is tiny. it really doesn't look much bigger than the G1. it's certainly deeper and the prism hump/flash is larger. but the profile is very small.

Will the NX10 match the picture quality of the K-x? It's within about a hundred dollars.

At low ISOs (100, 200, 400), it will probably be a good match for the K-X or any other APS-C DSLR. Once you get into the higher ISOs (800 and up), the smaller 4/3 sensor of the Samsung is going to show its weaknesses.

the Samsung is an APS-C Sensor. It should in theory, come close. There was speculation on if it was the same sensor found in the K7, but I never followed it.

Oh oops, I kept thinking it was M 4/3. In that case, it should come close to other APS-C cams depending on the software processing used (less of a problem if you shoot RAW)

The NX10 it isnt really doing any better at high ISOs than the M4/3s cameras, in fact some reviews say it is worse.

There is a rumor that Schneider Kreuznach lenses will be available for the NX10 soon, which could make the system a lot more appealing.

schneider puts its name on practically anything, so that's not really a reason to hope.

I just saw the dpreview review, and the RAW noise does seem quite high. The NX10 also seems to suffer from an overly aggressive in-camera NR system that smears details on JPEGs.

Btw, Schneider-branded lenses doesn't actually mean all that much in most cases. A lot of Panasonic cameras have Leica-branded lenses, but many of those are actually made by Panasonic with "design input" from Leica.

Now, if the lenses were truly made by Schneider, then you can bet they're going to be hella expensive. For example, the Leica D Summilux 25mm f/1.4 for 4/3 is made by Panasonic and still costs $800. I don't think many buyers of the NX10 are going to be willing to plop down $1k for a Schneider-branded lens.

looks like turd.
why spend this much for a 4/3 when you can get an entry DSLR with better quality for slightly more (or even less)??
and it's not even that much smaller than a D40.

have you seen one in person? it really is much smaller than a D40. the lens is a little smaller but the body is very small. i could fit the lens and body into cargo pants. can't do that with a D40.

I am more interested in the rumoured focal lengths and release dates. If correct. there could be a good range of primes available by the end of the year.

2010:
-15mm f/2.3 Super-Angulon
-21mm f/2 Super-Angulon
-35mm f/1.4 Xenon
-55mm f/1.4 Xenon

2011:
-90mm f/1.8 Tele-Xenar
-70mm f/2.8 Claron (Macro)

yeah that's nice and all but you still have to carry the lens in a bag so it makes the small form factor pretty pointless.

Not sure if you are talking about the NX10 or not (as you mention 4/3s and the NX10 isnt 4/3 or M4/3).

The 4/3s lenses are notably smaller than larger sensor counterparts and it does make a difference when you have to carry them. Gf1 + 20mm prime (or NX10 with the pancake) is a very small package.

The smaller cameras will continue to grow in popularity.

again, i'm not arguing that they're smaller than DSLR's. there's no debating that.

but they are not small enough to keep in your pants (lens attached) unless you have huge pockets. even then it's not comfortable.
i can barely stand pocketing a canon P&S.

so now you've got to carry a lens separately, or multiple lenses seeing that it's marketed as an interchangeable lens camera so you need a bag now.

add to that the fact that they aren't much cheaper than an entry level DSLR and other compromises (speed, IQ, options) and it quickly drops out of consideration.

who said anything about keeping it in your pants lens attached?

Werd.

PENTAX DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited
PENTAX DA 70mm F2.4 Limited

Would be a hell of a setup if there weren't the niggling issue of compatibility, and would not take up much space in the pants at all, leaving ample room for... other things.

ok, so where do you keep the lens? in a camera bag right?
so if you're going to carry a bag, doesn't that go against one of the big selling points of this type of camera?

why not just get a DSLR?

You keep a lens or 2 in your pants pocket.

When hiking or engaging in "urban exploration", there's huge difference between carrying 5 lbs of gear and 2 lbs.

it's bigger and bulkier. I carry a timbuk2 to work everyday, use it for random things, the camera fits in nicely w/o taking up much space. it also weighs less than a rebel+30/1.4.

not everyone values that. I do. Hence buying the GF1+20 kit. Granted, I think it could be cheaper, but I'm impatient.
