Also, this has to be the most inappropriate title for an article I have ever seen.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/09/samsung-galaxy-note-vs-dell-streak-5-fight/

There is absolutely no competition going on here, just pics with the two of them. I dont think they should be allowed to use titles like that unless theres something really interesting going on, a comparison of features, discussion of pros & cons. But I think we already agreed long ago that gadget enthusiasts have no journalistic integrity of any kind.

For a neophyte like me, what is this Galaxy Note...a phone, tablet, both?

Its 5.3 inches and has a very powerful System On Chip. Super nice small tablet or huge phone, depending on how you see it. Good for games, email, movies, whatever. Screen isnt so big that its cumbersome but for someone like me its good enough for all day use, as opposed to a tiny phone I cant type on.

Nothing in that size range has sold well yet, it does seem very well done, but only a few hardcore buyers will spring for it.

The only other 5 inch phone I know about was the Streak, which had underpowered hardware and out of date software as soon as it hit the shelves. Obviously it could not succeed.
Of course if I wait a whole year for this thing to come down then it will be the same story.

There are, at present, two version of the Note: the origimal version, released at the end of October in the EU, has a dual core Exynos (Samsung) SoC and GSM bands but no LTE, and the new version, first released in Korea, that has a Snapdragon SoC and LTE radios. So far the only ones I've heard about being imported to the USA is the GSM Exynos version and I've not seen any benchmarks for the newer LTE version.

I've been tempted to pickup the GSM version and the prices are now coming down to about $700 USD but I think I'll wait until the second or third batch are shipping out. Seems like there has been a good many problems with the display but it's not clear if the problems are mostly hardware or software so, once again, I think I'll wait till that dust clears.

I like a lot of the features of the Note and in particular the stylus, if done well, offers the potential to permit more detailed (finely detailed) selection and editing. That said, I do think the Note is a bit too large. If I were designing a phone for this space I'd go about 5 inches for the screen but a smaller bezel area permitting a phone with outside dimensions of about 5"x3" versus the Notes 5.8"x3.3". OTH, I'd go with a slightly thicker phone with less rounded edges and an even bigger battery.

Oh, and one more feature that might be nice is a finger print scanner like the ones on laptops. With this you would not need to enter a password to protect your phone but you would still need that as an option for those times when swiping your finger is not an option.

Another victim of the network speed marketing hype, AT&T cripples the Galaxy Note by switching out the Exynos in favor of the LTE capable Qualcomm chip.

I'm glad I went ahead and picked up a free Galaxy S2 instead of waiting for the Note. Snapdragon absolutely ruins it and the Adreno 22o is horribly underpowered for such a high resolution.

At&t's LTE network is the single worst thing to happen to their smartphone lineup.
