Samsung ML-1740 Laser Printer $76.34

Yah, but unlike inkjets, toner doesn't dry out after a year. The yield on the toner cartridge is 3000 pages. Even at 3000 pages for $60 that's only 2cents a page for toner cost. That's waay cheaper printing costs than most inkjets. Still, compared to most laser printers it's not the greatest deal in the world. My old HP LJ 4 gets 6800 pages/cartridge for only $65.

Assuming this isn't a piece of junk, this is a good deal for a laser printer. I'd consider buying one if I didn't already have a laser printer. At 3000 pages (that's 6 reams of paper), you'll not need to replace the toner for quite a while unless you do a lot of printing.

We are trying these out as our disposable lasers in a very high maintenance environment. So far, none have died from dust, crap getting inside. It has been almost 3 months now.

I also use these for desktop Windows printers in my office because the purchase price is low and the footprint is small. Only for lower volume users that need desktop convenience. We have had no problems.

I am curious about your application...
I want to use one of these in a DOS/Ascii printer code situation, but Samsung says GDI only, so Windows or other OS only. Do you use them this way or have you a workaround?

Been considering something like this for my parents, they almost exclusively print in B&W and I order them maybe $60 or so of generic ink per year for their canon 880...

Heh, I got one for roughly $9 after rebate and pricematch from staples 1-2 months ago. It's a nice quality printer so far, but uses a lot more power than my inkjet did (if that matters to anyone). 😎

The toner that ships with this is only rated for 1,000 sheets according to the instruction manual.
