Samsung ml-1710 laser printer $79.23+tax AR free shipping

Thanks, just ordered. Seems great for college. Taxes were 12.87 for NYS. Total is ~ $92 after MIR. However, delivery is scheduled for the 26th, which is 9 days away.

I bought one for the office up here, it works great. I'm sending in my rebate monday.

I first tired walking into the store and purchasing this at the internet price and they denied me. So I came back to the office and ordered it for $169 - $20 coupon - $70 MIR. At B&M it was $199. Only took 2 days to get here, so not too bad.

Printer works great and is pretty quick. Don't forget to pick up an extra USB cord if you don't have a spare laying around. This printer does not come with a cord. I wouldn't recommend buying one from office depot, because they are high dollar there.. I'm sure you have your sources for getting cheap cables.

I second that! cheapest online is about $70, however this printer comes with a 1000 page cartridge that should last quite a while. Also, it hasa toner saver mode that they claim extends the cartridge life by 40%. The print quality is great for text even with the toner saver mode on, so it's on permanently on mine.

Excellent printer! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the output, and amazed by the speed of the little sucker. It beats the socks off my 5 year old 1200dpi laser printer!

Does anybody have experience with the D-Link 3-port print server DP-300U and this printer? The print server is on its way to me, and I'm just crossing my fingers that it works with the 1710, although the signs are not good (no Samsung printer is on the compatibility list of the server, the printer is GDI...). I will report what I find out in a few days.

Yes!, please report on how/if it works.

Have you tried printing pictures yet? those don't come out so great, but who prints black and white pictures anyway.

Pictures come out fine, there are artifacts in dark areas, as in MOST printers anyway, but 600dpi does look pretty good, almost no reason to go to higher resolution. I used to think I needed the higher resolution, but given the price of this printer, I am satisfied with 600 🙂 Oh, and the print server is the DP-300U, fixed it in the post above.

HERE is my DEAL:
Well I opened my printer box up on Sunday night to surprisingly find my 'NEW' printer and accessories had already been opened and possibly used. The toner cartrdige had been opened and already placed into the printer.

I went back to OD yesterday to try to get an exchange for a NEW and UNOPENED box and complained. I told them that it is deceiving to sell opened items without any CLEAR marking on the box with a discounted price. I also told them it was against the law. I then spoke to the manager and told him the same thing. After arguing with him I found out that my local OD has essentially no method of marking opened boxes and that they couldn't guarnatee that any ML-1710 boxes actually contained a NEW printer with UNOPENED accessories. Well I told them that was ridiculous and demanded a discounted price; the manager said he was willing to give me a 20% reduction, and I accepted. Best of all when I opened it up, it actually ended up being a new printer (everything in unopened plastic bags). So this is my final price:

$170 - $30 (Staples $30 of $150 competitor coupon) - (20% off reduction) + tax = ~$110 ... $110 - 70 rebate = $40!

Anyway...the main part of this story: if you are buying from OD B&M, make sure you are getting a BRAND NEW printer...in fact, open it up right there in the store and check! If it has been opened before then demand a reduction in price.

AND here is my REVIEW:

As for the printer itself:
It is small and worked perfectly fine with my USB2.0 cable (even though the printer is USB1.1). It is very fast. The text quality is amazing (even better when you consider the price). The graphic output, although said to be horrible, was pretty good. I printed a screen size picture of a set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's from BestBuy's website and it looked fine to me (actually it looked better than fine, even comparable to or better than my mom's HP1200SE LaserJet's image quality).

Also the software included is pretty useful. I just installed the print software (not the Print Monitor software). The software has many features and interesting configurations. For one, you can choose how long to wait before the printer enters the 'power save' mode. Also you can configure the toner saver function from within the software (as well as by clicking the button on the printer). I printed two copies of my resume, one in toner saver mode and one in regular mode...I couldn't tell the difference so I'll stick with the toner saver mode and extend my starter toner life by 40%. Other cool features of the software include the ability to put watermarks on the paper (like draft, confidential, etc), set up page templates, and to print multiple pages per sheet (like scaling down 4 pages and putting them on one side of a sheet of paper). This feature is great when printing out CS code.

Anyway, sorry for my long review. I'm just real happy with this printer so far. The only conceivable knock against this printer is that it is a little loud when warming up and printing, but it is silent in power save mode of course. Other than that, I am amazed at its performance and value. I think it is a steal even at the sale price of $99 after rebates.

PS....there are way to many ML-1710 threads...I have no idea which one to post in anymore??

As promised, a short report on the compatibility of the DLink DP-300U and the Samsung ML1710:

They work just fine together! I recommend the print server (only ~$80), if you have more than 1 PC, and/or more than 1 printer. The status monitor software does not work, however, but who cares.

How does this compare with the Minolta 1250W? I might head out and purchase that for a relative tomorrow but I'm just wondering if it's a much better buy (tomorrow is the last day for the Officemax sale of the 1250).

While I'd love to use a print server for maximum convenience, I don't want to spend $80 (or even $50) on it.
I have a windows machine that's always on, so I just connected the printer to it and shared it to make it accessible form other computers: works like a charm! I even can print form my Linux box using CUPS and accessing the shared printer over SMB. You don't have to install the proprietary drivers that are on the printer CD, just tell CUPS that your printer is the ML-1210 model with default GDI/ghostscript and you're, in business. Works great with text, pics and everything.

Where does one get the $20 off rebate?

I get all the way to purchase and it still shows $169.

I printed the $70 rebate and would be ready to send in, but need the $20 off rebate.

What's up with this.

Thx

Duh. You can always do that, what's the point? 1997 called - they want their way of setting up printer sharing back 😛

There is no $20 rebate, only a $20 coupon that must be applied upon ordering.

BTW: I received my printer in 2 days (delivered by their trucks), rather than the 9 it originally had said. Haven't opened it up yet.

1250W is a Windows only printer i.e. rendering is done on the PC, not the printer.
1250W will not work with Linux, Mac, etc.; any OS other than Windows, forget it!

Final verdict, get the Samsung. 😀😀😀
Thanks, Midwayman. I was waiting for just this deal! 😀😀😀
