PQ seemed the same to me on both sets, not much of a videophile. I like the thin bezel of the sharp more. i like the glossy finish of the samsung as well.
decisions, decisions....

I currently have the 46D64U. I love everything about this set except for the fact that it has some slight uneven backlighting issuses, aka banding. Sometimes it is not noticeable at all, and sometimes it is. It all depends on what your watching.
I have been also researching the Samsung which seems to have no issuses with banding, only some have minor clouding issuses. But the biggie is that they seem to have a wide spread problem of HDMI video inturruptions/disconnects.
Worst case with either set; I think that I would rather have slight banding, then have the video drop out on ya.

Go check out the AVS forum for yourself. They have threads on pretty much every LCD series.

The HDMI issue with the Samsung sets has been fixed for some time now. As long as you aren't buying old stock you should be good. The banding issue wasn't as much of a problem with the 64U series as it was with the 62U series but it's still there. I personally went for the samsung over the sharp, but both sets are nice. Though I do have to say that I like not having any backlight problems (typing on my 4065F right now too).

It makes the picture look nice, but does sunlight destroy it?

That is key also what kinda room are you putting it in?

I have a LC32D64U and love the TV

No banding on my LC46D62U. The uneven back lighting problem is not the same thing as banding. At least not from the pics I have seen of severe banding. Mine also has no uneven back lighting problem, even turned up to max settings on the back light.

The uneven banding (can be one wide or thin line or many lines of horizontal, vertical or both) is related to the LCD itself or the electronics somehow, and usually is only displayed in certain modes or resolutions or in certain high contrast ratios. I have seen many off brands that suffer from banding of different kinds, as well. So this might be either a hardware problem with some devices attached to the sets, or some inherent problem with some LCD designs. Or both.

But you stand just as much chance buying any brand TV DOA out of the box as you will possibly getting a defective unit. Buying a larger size TV is a crap shoot like that. One minor drop at some point in shipping before you get it is all it will take to ruin it. Most posters in that thread with multiple TV returns are obviously having some other issues with hardware or dirty power or something else effecting their TVs in my opinion. I kind of doubt Sharp will send them 5 defective TVs in a row, but your mileage may vary.

The banding issue with the sharp 62U and 64U series was confined to the larger sets (42" +) from what I've read.

As far as the Samsung glossy screen goes. The most anoying thing I have found is in my parents house. They have it in an entertainment center at a viewing distance of about 7' (max). However, the room is big as it opens up into the kitchen. If they keep the viewing area dark, but have a few lights on in the kitchen (say 25' or so from the TV), you will notice them during dark screens! That being said, the TV is much better than I expected in sun light. There is much less glare on the sammy than there was on their old RCA 35" CRT that was in there. Before I left I had calibrated their set and turned the back light down to a more reasonable level (5 of 10 at it's highest setting and 3 or 4 for HD-DVD). Even at that level, the LCD is still very bright. I'm currently using mine with the lights on in my room (including a full fluorescent office style strip light - 4 bulbs @ under 5' away) to type this message and I have back light on 3. The brightness of the LCD, combined with the glossy screen itself, really helps to eliminate some of the glare problem.

As a general guideline, for people that haven't seen the set, I would say that it's in between a normal matte LCD screen and a glass plasma screen as far as glare goes. It definitely doesn't suffer as many problems as the plasma screen does (because even when calibrated it's brighter). However, it's not a matte LCD screen... so there will be some glare... and there definitely is glare from the piano black bezel! I can clearly see the under armor logo on my hoodie as I type this... and I could probably shave in it if I wanted to.

My 4665 has absolutely no banding issues at all. In terms of clouding, I feel like I can *maybe* see a tiny cloud near the bottom right of the panel, but it is only visible (and barely visible) when the screen is displaying nothing. There is absolutely no noticable difference in that area when the screen is displaying anything besides black.

I said it in the other thread, the 4665 is one hell of an amazing TV. Everyone that has seen it at my house has agreed that it is THE BEST panel they have ever seen. The glossy finish I thought would be annoying at first but it is absolutely UNNOTICABLE when you are watching the TV. I have quite a bit of ambient light in my viewing room and all it does is make the picture stand out less, I haven't found reflecting light to be an issue AT ALL.

This thing has inputs galore too, so many I am not anywhere near filling them all. I have a DVI to HDMI connector for my PC and it looks amazing playing WoW at 1080p on my TV. PC, Xbox, Wii, PS3 all of them look incredible on this set.

Another awesome feature of this set is the QAM tuner. There are 2 cable input tuners on the back of the TV, a regular cable tuner and a QAM tuner. The cool thing about the QAM tuner is that I plug in just a regular basic cable line into it and it pulls all local HD stations right off of that. So I am paying for basic cable but I get to watch every football game in HD every sunday!!!! And that...well that just makes me happy.

I can't remember the last time I felt so good about a purchase I made though, and this one cost me $1500 bucks. So I was very worried going into it but its really a great feeling every time I look at this set.

Since there are 2 threads on this I'm gonna copy it into both of them. I hope this helps you guys, I just felt the need to get on the soap box about this TV, I love it.
