Samsung hard drives... How Reliable are they ???

Hello,

I'm thinking of purchasing 3 new hard drives... in the 80 gig range and noticed that Samsung has 7200 rpm drives.
I was wondering on the quailty and reliability of these drives.

I also saw that there is other size models also, so possibly the information on those would also be helpful.

I have had two Samsung Drives both are still going strong and I got them in 96. One has developed a bad sector but what do you expect after all these years

Both drives where quite loud but mind you that was 6 years ago so I am sure they have toned down the noise

I am not sure I follow the relevance of that statement to the information in this thread. Is newegg the only place to shop now?

Yes, NewEgg sells Samsung hard drives. They recently added several of the SpinPoint ATA/100 series. Do a little research, guys

I have a 40 gig samsung, got it about a year and a half ago; they are still VERY loud. However I just bought two seagate barracuda's and they are much quiter, and to tell the truth they are a little faster. Some people don't like seagate, but I'm more than pleased. Just my input.

All I know for sure is that Samsung generally makes good stuff, not necessarily the best, but good. Their drives are not notorious junk, anyway, I honestly can't recall any threads along the lines of "My new Samsung drive just died"....

I do seem to recall that they're at the low end of the performance scale for 7200 rpm drives, though, Something from Storagereview.com, if I remember correctly.....

They didn't sell Samsung hd in the past.

For 40G, just $4 cheaper than Maxtor or $3 cheaper than WD or $2 cheaper than IBM.

i bought a 5400 rpm 40gb for a friend's computer and so far no problems in the whole few days it's been in use...not much help i suppose...

but i can comment on noise...it's louder than my fujitsu MPFxxxAH 7200rpm drive, but just about everything is...it's quiter than the quantum-gone-rebadged-maxtor drives that's for sure...it's a medium noise-level for hdds, i'd assume.

they look sort of big tho...i've noticed...like thick or something...seem heavier too...no idea as to what the platter density is or how many platters they use...i'd consider checking it out.
