Samsung Galaxy Note 2

I wish Samsung could finally come up with a 4.1 update (if not straight to 4.2... I have a feeling it's a very small difference whether to port to one or the other?) for the original Note.
They have, and it's been leaked. You can ROM it now, and it should be officially released soon.

Problem is, of course, if you have a non-N7000 model.

My only issue with this device is that it only comes with 11gb of usable space for apps and content. Should've been a 32gb, minimum.

Any thoughts on cases like Seidio that feature a magnetic kickstand? I've heard conflicting reports of the magnets causing problems with the phone and/or the stylus?

Loving this phone so far. As far as group messaging apps like GoSMS, WhatsApp, GroupME, etc, I feel like I used them all on my SGS3 and they all sucked one way or another. GoSMS was the closest thing I could get to the iOS group messaging, but it was incredibly laggy and slow to boot. Hoping 4.2 finally solves this.

here's a few tricks i learned today:

when keyboard is present, hold down the speaker icon (between SYM and spacebar) to get to:
1) clipboard
2) click on settings button from there. go to handwriting option. change recognition time to 100ms. pen is now more responsive and writing feels much more natural.

This appears to only work with Recognition type set to Complete recognition. If set to Stroke recognition, a 100ms response time results in a complete mess.

I bought a 64g SD card on amazon for $50.

Plenty of space now.

Yeh but only movies, pictures, music and downloaded content can be put on there. And if you create a picture album and move pictures to it then it automatically adds to the built in storage first and you have to move it on your own.

If you have large apps (games) you can't force them to the SD card without a root/hack.

nope, works fine with stroke recognition.

Hmm, for me if I tried to right "Hello" in stroke recognition, it would read thr first stroke as an I, then thr next vertical stroke as a lowercase L, thrn the horizontal stroke as some random character. It never came close to recognizing the 3 strokes as an H.

Otoh many large games are programmed to offload asset data to SD card if available. GTA vice city does, as does devil's lawyer.

Look at the bright side, at least Android has the option. Certain platforms do not.

we've covered this. jellybean takes away the option.

I really can't believe that such technically-inclined people can't seem to understand how Android partitions and storage works.

Jellybean removed the option to move the app's APK file to the SD card. It's depricated and un-necessary and it can and does break some app operability (try putting widget APKs on your SD card in ICS and expect that widget to work correctly).

Almost every app in existence that requires extra data (whether it's downloaded through the app itself or the Google Play store) will put that data on the "SD card".

Some older apps will ask "SD card or Device storage", and for those it really doesn't matter on Unified Storage devices (anything designed for HC/ICS and higher), as APKs go on the Internal storage anyway on those devices.

So root it? There will be Jelly Bean options soon. And i am pretty sure some games i have downloaded have put some game assets on the SD card. I have quite a few larger games on my phone right now with no issues.

Pocket Legends
Arcane Legends
NFS Most wanted
Dueling Blades
Dead Trigger
Wild Blood
Cabals
Zenonia 5

Plus 20 or so apps

Well some apps don't put their bulk data on SD, nor do they provide the means to do so. So it would be nice to have an option. I searched, and the only real solution I could find (other than moving all of your contents onto SD), was a program someone wrote (not in play store, search XDA forums) called Directory Bind. I use the MOG music service, and can download songs, but they are stored in the native app folder. I used this program to move it all over to the SD card. Looking at the other subscription music services, it appears as though they all have this problem.

I just seen something today, on all of the android platform, Jelly Bean has a 10% install base.

As that number rises i am sure we will see more options.

Yep, Slacker is my music rental app of choice and all of the cached stations go to the device storage. I guess Rhapsody has a user defined path that you can force storage to (extsdcard vs sdcard0).

You are right. Some games don't support that. A lot of good ones do though.

Any advice on spellchecking for this device? I don't want to lose handwriting capabilities by switching to another keyboard.

Ihave a GN2 and some pictures when i try to add to a folder it says unsupported file and it wont let me erase some pics

A question and some points:
How fast is WLAN in crowded air-space for other owners?
I can't get movies to stream over SMB, which my Archos 5 (limited to 11Mbit on 802.11g) will play without a hitch. Wondering where that stems from.

Also: They don't include handwriting recognition for all languages by default - it's limited to the region of the ROM. Annoying. They added US English to the German ROM with the last update, besides UK English, but French is still missing. On a French ROM, French recognition is present and works well. Haven't found any way to install this, enabling the language by itself is insufficient. Might have to go looking for a Belgian ROM, maybe they have more languages completely installed.

Also, are there any custom ROMs out yet, that ship with the Samsung keyboard and stroke recognition, and support installing the S-Note software? And S-Note replacements that work slightly more intuitively?

Also: FFS, where am I supposed to touch the bloody thing. Just popping on the back panel usually has me do at least five different things at once, just because I hit all the buttons.
Recessed buttons would have been so much nicer, also for kickstandability.
I guess they just assume everybody uses some ugly case.

Has anyone tried out the HDMI+USB dock yet? It's quite expensive, but might come in handy with maybe a pico-projector and a foldable keyboard as a "fits-into-any-bag" truly portable system.

Are you in the US? If you register your Note II on samsung's site, they send you a 50% coupon on an entire order for its accessories. At least I still think they do right now.

In France with a phone I bought in Germany 😉
But maybe there's a similar offer around here. Saving 30 euro makes the Dock a good deal.

Most phones come with little internal storage.

That's why there is the microSD expansion on the Galaxy Note 2.

And that's why the Galaxy Note 2 is the best smartphone on the market right now. Quad core overclocked 1.6 GHz Exynos 4 CPU, 2GB RAM, 5.5 inch Super AMOLED RGB display technology, microSD expansion up to 64GB and high tech stylus.

This, i have a 64g card in mine, love it.
