So, I have a friend that has one that is willing to sell me for $430 bucks.. brand new... still has the box etc.. he has turned it on....

I am now up for my every 2 year or whatever with verizon... I can get it for 249... brand new...

Do I spend the $430 to get a phone that i am not tied to with a contract or do I spend the 250 and get the phone ?

Thoughts on anyone that has done this before ?

Save your upgrade for the next iPhone. Buy the Nexus from your friend.

When iPhone 5 launches, you can use the upgrade to get one and then sell it for a tidy profit. Though I think being free from a 2 year commitment is worth more, but that's what a lot of people do.

off contract

also why is your buddy selling his phone

Really didnt get into it... he hasnt even loaded his 4g SIM into it... He talked about returning it but its past the 14 days....

so you would pay the 430 and just say F it then eh ?

I would buy off contract, upgrade to new iphone down the road, and sell the iphone as the other guy suggested.

Or just save the upgrade for whatever the new android hotness will be next year.

I do have a decent Thunderbolt right now.. .its a battery hog but you get the point.. LOL

buy an iPhone 4s today. buy your friends gnexus. sell ip4s and tbolt. never ever hold off using a subsidy you will just pay for months of subsidy at $17 ish needlessly. you should almost always use a subsidy immediately for the most easy to resell phone if you plan on staying on that carrier if you want the most benefit

At this point I think he should wait for the next iPhone. You have to resell it within the first week or two of launch for maximum profits. New iPhones are down to ~$450 on craigslist now.

agreed... i will prolly just get the iphone 5 and sell it for something silly and just put the nexus back on my plan...

Do folks do this alot ?

I did on my last upgrade... Didn't want to spend the money on a data plan, and all of the "feature phones" were less than stellar. So I got the Droid Incredible for $150 when it first came out, and sold it for $550 on craigslist. Didn't even open it.

makes sense... so I could really offload a new iphone then...

I've never done this but can see a time when I might (I use a Captivate right now and it works fine....so I might have another upgrade for myself but at some point I could see myself saying "current phone is fine - don't need a new flavor but would like $500 in my pocket"

How do you execute this - I mean, how do you get it in the box and they haven't even put in the new SIM card etc.

I'm not exactly sure how I did it, it was 2 years ago. I remember I did something online, I had to accept terms and conditions or something. Then I called customer service to make sure I did everything right, straight up told the girl I just wanted to make sure I could sell the phone without any repercussions. She asked why I wanted to sell it and I told her because I didn't want a data plan, she tried to talk me into one, and then I declined and she said I was all set. So I think you need to make sure you accept any terms for your new contract, and you're free to sell. Its best just to call VZW customer service to make sure everything is done right.

sure

my point is though that if you are upgrade eligible now, but dont upgrade until say september

then you are paying $15-17 a month until september (9 months) into an upgrade you have already earned. (so like another $130 essentially lost).

i.e. you are just throwing that money away, since its going to a subsidy you already have. so you might as well just get the best reselling phone now.

i think honestly if you are an upgrader now, since you have to pay sales tax on iphones since they dont sell them on amazon (and you have to pay on the full price in a lot of states like CA) that sadly the best phone for reselling right now might actually be the spectrum if you get it for $129 on amazon.

sells for $470ish on ebay. so $300 profit after fees.

an iphone at $200 + tax, selling for $500-520 would possibly yield as low as $250...

the rezound might be a good "reselling" choice too if you part out the headphones. only reason i know this is my upgrade is on thursday and i already bought a nexus (on ebay), so i'm lookng for the best deal for myself as well.

That would normally make sense, except for some reason iPhone fans are willing to shell out $700 or more during those first few days of a new launch. 😉
