Guys, these are great burners. I have burned AT LEAST 3,000 discs in each of the 2 I have (and that IS NOT an exageration) and they are still going strong....

Thanks OP! These deals were pretty common at the beginning of this year, but then dried up. I picked up one as a spare.

Now, what's the deal with ZZF popping up a huge window on checkout with a message from a sponsor or something?

The reviews on this drive doesn't seem to be that good...
And no, I'm not looking at Newegg reviews.

I've read the same. Average/mediocre DVD burner and poor CD burner (as far as C1/C2 and PI/PO error scans are concerned).

I did have my friend get one based on price though, as his expectations are more in line with that of Newegg reviewers (i.e. as long as it burns successfully, it's a "good" burner). Perhaps future firmware releases will turn it into a better burner than what I saw a few months back.

Ok, I'll bite. Which reviews?

I'm also curious. I searched, but didn't find anything.

This is one DVD drive I have that died. It still reads disks fine, but can't spin up fast enough to write a DVD.

Ironically I'm still tempted to get one.

It seems the only difference is that the "C" model has 0.5mb less for the buffer.

I have the S223Q model, and it works fine in my Hack (although it has an annoying firmware issue that keeps the machine from sleeping on timeout -- sleeps fine being forced) but I'm looking to start a CD-ripping project, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for something like that. Obviously that's the difference in "a burn [or rip in this case] is 'successful'" and "good" that you're talking about.

I found two threads on MYCE (formerly CD Freaks) "Samsung SH-S223B" deals specifically with the differences between the SH-S223xs-->http://tinyurl.com/ykh9ezt and a thread called "Samsung SH-S223 results & discussion" http://tinyurl.com/yz9d7uu, with burn results, etc. There is a load to digest, but after a very quick look tonight, apparently the different letters refer to different countries of origin, and/or different chipsets.

I used to get excited about comparing different burners, checking out hacked firmware, etc. However, I think I have moved on. At this stage of the game, I think I'd just like my burners to do as they are told without me having to spend too much time in R&D mode. Perhaps I am becoming jaded.

It's not just you. When I got my NEC like 5 years ago, I spend days upon days researching. I was burning stuff left and right. Then I quit, and still have the same stack of blanks I started with. Might do a little research with this one, but not like I did before. Who knows though, might get back into the burning mode.

Good to know I do not need to feel so all alone :)
