I would LOVE someone to look into how much we could save if we threaten to cancel various services. I've received UNBELIEVABLE cell phone packages (1,750 free anytime minutes, 4,500 night and weekend minutes, 500 cell to cell minutes and nation-wide long distance for $24.99 a month - Verizon) and have done similar with DirecTV. I'm sure more could be done with extermination service, magazine subscriptions, Cable-Modem, Insurance, Home Security, banking, etc.

Kind of a brag and moan - but work with me here.

What did you say to the Verizon rep to get them to offer that? What plan did you have before? Were you under contract at that time?

Yeah seriously. I've never heard of Verizon budging when you threaten to cancel.

I had been a subscriber for 5 years through work at the BASE BASE program. I called to cancel, thinking that I'd go to T-Mobile. They sent me to an area that deals with cancellations. I tod them I wanted to cancel my service and they offered something fairly low-ball. I pushed hard and asked (very friendly) what other offers they have. This gal kept looking for programs, and I kept pushing. I'm pretty sure that the 1,000 anytime minutes stacked on top of the 750 anytime minutes was a mistake on their part, but have to give them credit for continuing to honor it. The key was to keep asking what other promotional items they have at their disposal to keep you as a customer.

I called my Sprint cell carrier and told thm I was looking into switching services and wanted to know if they could match or beat the others. I was "giving" them a shot to keep me. I got 350 extra minutes bringing me to 850, nights and weekend starts at 8 instead of 9pm, a new phone, and $5 knocked off my bill so it nows costs me $45 a month. And I didnt have to re-sign a new contract to get it all. I just mentioned I was thinking of moving to new carrier but I have been with you for almost 2 years and want to give you a shot to keep me around. I got transfered fast without hessitation to a specialist. YMMV of couse with it.

The free Tivo would be a hot deal I'd say - of course YMMV

With my luck, anytime I'd threaten canceling anything, I'd get an "OK, done! cya!!!"

I called a couple of days ago. There is something seriously wrong with their phone system.
I finally got through after getting busy signals like 10 times.

Said I was considering Cable and wanted to know if they had any incentives.

They asked me what Cable was offering me.

I said they had "one of them teeevo things and free HBO".
They said they couldn't do HBO, but they would give me six months of their showtime package.
Got the Showtime while still on the phone.
The guy said the computer was acting up so he would have to call me back with a confimation thing for the tivo.

He never called back. The next day I called and this nice lady took care of me.
I even made up a lie that the original representative had said he would "knock five bucks" off my bill to make up for the montly tivo payments. She wasn't really buying it. But she did waive my second receiver and my local channels for 6 moths. Eight dollar a month savings.

I should have said that the cable company was offering me six vestal virgins and an HDTV.

:p

Instead of what some might consider "scamming", you might just call and demand that they match your plan with the incentives they're giving others (like here)... that seems only fair to me, that they should do so without any threat to cancel... then again it they were in the mood to be fair the rates'd be lower already.

not a scam at all. why should loyal subscribers NOT be able to get the same deal as new subscribers.

Dave,

I have no problem using this form of "Negotiation." Which Samsung did they offer you?

Nice deal indeed and the longer you are a DTV customer and the bigger your monthly bill is the more leverage you will have down the road.

Ive been a DTV customer for at least 4 years and my bill has been anywhere from $50-$60 a month.

Last year they offered customers will more than 2 years service who called in and bluffed for a bargain a $99 hi-def reciever if you pre-purchased $400 + service ...so you output $550 ish and your account was automatically credited $450 and you got a Hi-Def reciever for $100.

Well I called and got this deal then changed my mind because I already had a Tivo and did not feel it was something I needed. They cancelled it and credited my CC back the $550 and credited my account $450...well ill stop there.

Anyhow I'll wait until they offer free high def Tivos for a push. :)

Oh and dont be shy, just ask for the deal and you will get switched to the Customer Retention dept.

The way the thread poster worded it makes it sound scamish but its not a scam by any strech of the imagination.

Though if your a new customer that still under a 1 year contract then its not likely they will give you the deal.

:)

Careful with this, you get the wrong rep and this is exactly what will happen. And no amount of remorse
will save you...

So true...

Hell, this will happen even if you get the right rep, but at the wrong time. Or they think your voice is annoying... or...

or who knows, maybe they'll give you free electronics and money.
