Samsung buys video streaming software firm Boxee
Wants to improve its smart televisions

ELECTRONICS GIANT Samsung has bought Boxee to boost its smart television technology.

Boxee is best known for its software and the Boxee Box that uses Google's Android to stream video over the internet. The firm has announced that it has been purchased by Samsung, though it did not disclose for how much.

According to a post on Boxee's website, being bought by Samsung will allow it to bring parts of its software to Samsung's hardware. The firm referred to television products, though given Samsung's extensive mobile product range of smartphones and tablets, it won't be surprising to see some of Boxee's technologies appear in those devices.

Boxee did however deliver one piece of bad news as it said it will shut down its cloud based digital video recorder service on 10 July. The firm said it will mean those users who used the service to record programmes will not be able to access those recordings after 10 July and offered the alternative to keep those recordings elsewhere.

Boxee was pretty good. How long will it take Samsung to pooch it?
