Here's to hoping it's merely the "reveal" that has been postponed, and not the actual launch. The rumored launch is either the last Thursday of October or the first Thursday of November.

I think I want this. Please release soon!

There's talk it's out of respect (or out of worry for looking classless) for Jobs's funeral. They did say "... it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced." Note they didn't actually say anything about the launch being delayed, just the announcement.

This. If it means they get to say "oh yeah, you can buy it tomorrow", that's acceptable. But to be honest, it's still stupid. They SHOULD be stepping all over Apple's crappy launch.

Yeah, lots of people bought the Bionic when it launched.

Hmm, last minute hardware change? I think they'll need more than two weeks to bump the hardware up. Unless Samsung has another device pretty much ready to go. The video leaks have ICS running perfectly smooth on the ICS device.

I wonder if Jobs's funeral is this weekend or maybe early next week, and that might be why the delay.

no way they do a hardware change. they might have to send it back to FCC for testing as well as make sure with Foxconn that the manufacturing won't be impacted or change the cost

That's my thinking too - that Tuesday is Steve Job's funeral and they moved it out of respect.

Respect, and I was thinking that Eric Schmidt and perhaps some of the others might attend the funeral as well.

Ah, that makes sense. Waiting till the 27th really doesn't, except for the novelty value of "ok, go buy it right now".

As mentioned before, looks like only the announcement is delayed, not the product itself and it seems confirmed that this is due to the death of Steve Jobs.

http://allthingsd.com/20111007/sams...nt-out-of-respect-for-steve-jobs-sources-say/

The decision to postpone things was made late last night at the top levels of both companies, sources said, with Jobs’ death being the reason. There are no delays with the product itself, sources insisted.

Update, 9:04 a.m. PT: In an updated statement, the companies confirmed they were making the move out of respect for Jobs.
“We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing,” the companies said

Kim Titus from Samsung:
Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course

In a sense yes, but on the business side it makes even more sense because everyone will be talking about the SJ's Funeral and no one will cover the new phone, so out of "respect" they rather delay it to let people sob and mourn for a few weeks and release the next phone.
The pictures and videos have been already leaked so people already know what to expect.

I'd be really surprised if there's a lot of press coverage of Steve Job's funeral. He was a private man in life, and I can't imagine that his family is going to change that. The press can't cover an event that they know nothing about. The leaders of Google were good friends with Steve before Android was released.. Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board of directors and Sergei and David received advice from Steve.

While you might think this is purely a business decision, I think that the business community in Silicon Valley is far more tightly knit than outsiders might think it is.

Honestly I wouldn't be entirely surprised if Gates even was invited/went. Gates and Jobs were rivals sure, but they did become the giants they are today partially due to one another. Besides that, I believe that Gates has a lot of respect for Jobs regardless of the professional differences.

Unless the announcement was going to be the same day as the funeral, which several people who would be at the announcement wanted to attend, delaying the announcement makes no sense.

Previously, they could have made their announcement before the 4S launch. Now they'll announce after, possibly losing a lot of potential customers who go out and buy a 4S in lieu of whatever may have been announced that might persuade them to hold off for that instead.

Steve always struck me as the type of person who wouldn't have put up with this kind of nonsense. If he had died before the Apple announcement he probably would have spent some of his last hours telling the rest of the company that they'd damned well better present on time or he'd come back to haunt them.

Fandroids just don't get how big of an impact Steve Jobs made on the world.
Love or hate his products, everything he touched disturbed the related industries.
This move illustrates that.

What does that have to do with stupid business decisions?

Patranus, what does Steve Job's impact on industry have to do with anything? You are agreeing with me? That the announcement has been delayed out of respect?

And can you please cut it out with the "fandroids" label? We have enough "us vs. them" in this forum. Throwing mildly insulting labels around is not conducive to having a rational discussion.
