Samsung 960 Pro NVMe M.2 SSD Heat Question

HI there,
I was wondering if my laptop has enough room to put an heat sink in for the SSD Drive? My Laptop is an MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. I have heard that the Samsung runs hot.

I have a really hard time calling that paper thin copper sheet a heatsink.

The tests I've read showed the 960 solved the heat issues of the 850 in real-world use so even if it doesn't do much their other changes worked.

You can get any nvme to throttle if you run the equivalent of Furmark, but no desktop application loads are going to do that.

I found a heat sink online just for the SSD. but I was just curious as to whether or not my laptop would be able to take it or not.

Not arguing the 960 wasn't a huge improvement over the 850. Just saying I don't see any data supporting we have that thin copper sheet to thank. It's a different drive design with a lower power consumption.

As I mentioned in your other thread,

You'll likely have to open your laptop and measure, and then compare it to the thickness of the heatsink you want to buy. Many laptops don't offer a whole lot of free space in there.

Are only you doing all this because of "hearing that Samsung drives run hot"? You might have been hearing about the 8-series drives, or about throttling when hammering the drive continuously at full speed for long intervals.

Was the drive supplied with the laptop? If yes, they already tested the thermals and the cooling is fine.

I am only doing this because of what I've heard about the drive running hot...No, I'm thinking about buying the SSD.I'm sorry ,I should have mentioned that I didn't have the SSD yet.

We probably should have asked you this earlier, but why the Pro? For most uses the 960 Evo is just as good and it's much cheaper. The Pro won't increase your FPS in games.

In fact, the only reason to replace the SSD that came with your laptop is if you want more space. And at 500 GB the Evo is $200 vs. $325 for the Pro.

I always try and strive for the best of everything. Mainly because of it's read speed. I would be mainly using if for my flight simulators because it would take about 2-3 minutes to load on my old drive that I have now.

Well, I think I'm going to stop looking for any thermal pads and such. I just read in an Samsung Brochure that it has something that helps with the temperature. Brochure from Samsung website.
