Samsung 840 EVO worth it still?

I never owned an SSD. I don't need an SSD. I want an SSD. Don't want to spend a lot of money. I have some spare change. Like $40. I found some good deals on eBay for used SSD's but with 1 year added Warranty, so I am covered and will get a replacement.

I don't wanna spend more than $40 otherwise I am not going to buy an SSD.
There is lots of competitor brands like ADATA, and others but I've heard a lot about the Samsung EVO SSD Series.

I was wondering if the 840 EVO 250GB was worth it for $35-$40 with 1 year warranty? As long as it last me 1 year then I am not worried about it. Just on a budget right now, don't really need an SSD anyways.

Thanks for the input.

I have to disagree. You need a SSD for modern computers. :)

You can buy a new SSD in the same price range, that comes with a 3-5 year warranty. With Black Friday coming up, you should be able snag a drive like the Crucial MX500, Western Digital 3D, Sandisk 3D, or Intel 545S for the same amount.

Even right now, those drives all are around $50, so if you get it on sale, you should be at the $40 range.

Now there are cheaper drives out there, and some of them have very bad performance. Much like a user that is no longer among us did, he bought a cheaper Sandisk Plus SSD, and then was very upset how badly it performed. Make sure to read a review on whatever drive you decide to go with.

@VirtualLarry buys entry-level SSDs for some of his builds, so maybe he has an "el cheapo" model he can recommend.

Hey Awesome Idea Admin! appreciate it, just gonna wait till Black Friday. Its in 10 days anyway didn't think of that.

By the way just to know in advanced is the EVO 840 still worth it? I think I can get a 250GB EVO 840 for like $30 right now but not sure, would have to make an offer to the seller.

Thanks.

A new one would be reasonably decent (although a little slower than newer drives). However, Samsung had some issues with the 840 series concerning the NAND I believe, and had to release a firmware update to fix the issue. However, with the drive being used and at least 4 years old at this point, I'd personally pass on it.

Just wondering Admin @UsandThem one last question for now.

Should I still wait on Black Friday sale or could this be top of the cream performance/value alternative? was gonna offer $35 shipped to him (maybe hehe) I just hear so much about EVO 800 series (specially the 850) thought I might not find something as good in performance to value ratio even ont he Black Friday Sale.

What you think? (link above)

Thanks

The Intel drive I mentioned above is pretty much equal in performance to the 850 EVO. The biggest difference is a used drive from Ebay will have no warranty, and you don't know what the SMART stats will show as far as wear. With a brand new Intel drive from a retailer, it comes new with a 5 year warranty.

I'd still go with a new drive with a warranty even if I had to wait a couple days to get it.

840 @$30 = a bad deal, especially when you can get the 860 (much faster) for around the same $$ with BF coming soon...

Shop & buy :D

Just bought a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD for $42 with 1 year warranty.

Just curious I never installed an SSD before. First time. My case (Signature) came with this for the SSD, would my 850 EVO fit here? I don't know how big it looks in person. Thanks. Just trying to get everything ready for when it arrives. Doing a fresh windows install instead of migrating anything.

Yes it will screw into the top of that mount (via 4 small screws coming up through those four holes).

Other than just setting Boot priority in BIOS for the HDD & SSD are there other steps to installing an SSD? anything special I have to do or its pretty much like any HDD?

Pretty much the same as installing on a HDD.

Just make sure to only have the SSD installed when you install Windows. Otherwise, if you have multiple drives already installed, Windows sometimes like to play 'whack-a-mole' and can install your boot partition on different drives. Just install Windows on the SSD, and when done power down and connect your SATA cables for your other drives.

perfect beginners tip! thank you so much! wouldn't have known this otherwise at this point.

So unhook HDD, leave only SSD active, turn computer on, if needed select SSD as Boot device in BIOS, Proceed to install Windows and perhaps needed programs at ones on the SSD. After this go ahead and connect HDD and enable AHCI (Raid) and again select SSD as Primary boot device. That's about it right?

So I have Windows 7 (Hate Win 10) on my 2TB HDD right now, but I got nothing I want to keep on my HDD (Just got games installed) so I am doing a fresh Windows Install on my SSD. I am gonna completely delete my 2TB HDD this sounds extremely dumb but wouldn't I need to format it before I can Raid with the SSD being the new boot/OS Device? Something isn't clicking in my brain but how would I go about Formating my HDD so its empty and clean so I can RAID it to my SSD?

You won't RAID the HDD with the SSD. Depending on the motherboard, it might say something like AHCI/RAID though.

Probably the easiest thing to do if you are going format the HDD, is to create a USB install drive directly from Microsoft, go into BIOS and select it as the boot device. Boot off of it, and follow the steps to get to the advanced area:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...-windows/38adfa8c-32f8-4354-8c53-13b5f2cf7e44

Select the partition that is you HDD and that you want formatted, and click delete. At that point, you can hold the power button down and power down the PC. Unhook the cable to the HDD, and connect your SSD. Boot your PC and the USB drive is still the first boot device, so it should start the Windows install. Go ahead and install Windows and then whatever else you want on the SSD. After that, shut down PC, and connect the HDD. At this point, you won't have the USB boot drive still connected to PC, so it will boot off of the SSD. However, if you want, you can go into BIOS and select the SSD (or sometimes the Windows Boot Manager depending on motherboard), and boot into Windows.

After that, Windows 10 will normally prompt you to format the HDD for it to work, and then it will assign a drive letter. If not, you can go into Disk Management, and format/assign drive letter in there.

250GB is a little small in 2018, are you sure that is all you need?

You have much to learn young Padawan.;)

You will have to tell the installer to install it to drive F in your case.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...ce-the-c/a1341eff-a8ed-4598-828e-9685fbb49d68

So if you are doing a game folder, it would be something like F:\Games\NameOfGame OrProgram

If you Just select F:\ , it will install the game or program in its own folder. Example F:\Bethosada\Fallout

Did I miss something? OP has a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB in a FS thread here?
Hahaha indeed! despite someones warning about getting a bigger drive and me not listening I had to find out the hard way. I honestly assumed that 250GB would be enough for my needs but I was wrong. So I am trying to sell it get some money back for it because I just bought a 500GB 850 EVO lol :D:D
