Samsung 840 Evo Frimware Update Issues...[Solved] Yay! I won!

Solved:

Solution for me was to put the SSD on a Non-RAID SATA port (5 and 6 on my mobo) and then run the bootdisk. The SSD was found and updated without issue.

Note: If you do this be sure to check your bios disk priority after you swap the cables back. My bios put my SSD (Win OS) disk at the bottom of the list on reboot.

I have a Samsung 840 Evo that I am trying to update to the newest firmware.

Samsung Magician will not read the SSD properly. This seems to be because I'm using AMD RAID drivers. I have two HDD drives in RAID0 and I really, really... really don't want to change that or lose that data.

Just to clarify, The SSD is not Raided with anything. The two HDD are in RAID0. Yet the Samsung bootdisk firmware program says it cannot find the SSD.

Things I have tried:

Using the Samsung boot firmware upgrade program. The program says that no SSD can be found. (I'm guessing this is because of the RAID setup)

Putting the 840 in a different machine and trying the Samsung boot firmware update. It gave me one exception error. Then I realized the bios was on IDE. So I switched it to AHCI. It then gave me a different exception error. (I'm guessing this is because I must have hit a family member of one of the Samsung coders with my car and this is his revenge.)

So, I'm out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

If I could use the Magician to update the firmware that would be best but, I don't know how to make that work.

Don't bother using Magician with two EVO's in RAID0.

I've done that for awhile with a seperate controller, Magician screws them all up.

I tried it out again the other day on a whim, I fought with em awhile getting rid of it again.

You'd have to take them out of RAID to do it I imagine, I upgraded them at one point, once they are in RAID good luck I'd say.

They are a PITA in those regards.

*Edit* my bad, I thought you had the SSD's in RAID.

Might have to try it out.

But things work fine here, I'm skittish about Magician these days, hopefully will fix his probs.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Mine works fine, so I don't piss with it atm.

Thanks for the quick responses.

MongGrel: The SSD is not paired with anything. I thought if I changed my bios from RAID to AHCI it would destroy the RAID config and data on the two HDD I do have in RAID0.

rgallant: I tried the bootdisk firmware upgrade. My results are listed under "Things I've tried:" It can't find the SSD.

Due to your config I think you're screwed trying to update it on that machine, at least I cannot think of a way but I am no expert on RAID. Probably best to update it in another machine so I would turn your attention to why that didn't work.

Can you repeat the steps of attempting to flash it in the other machine you tried and share exactly what the error was? The firmware update should work in IDE or AHCI mode. Some extracts from the Magician 4.6 manual:

General Limitation:
Firmware Update may fail on Samsung brand SSDs connected to AMD Controller or
IRST v10.0.0.1046. Please retry using default sata ahci controller(Microsoft drivers)

DOS Update Limitation:
AHCI or ATA mode must be enabled in the BIOS during PC boot up.

DOS Update Limitation:
The DOS Utility is not compatible with pure SCSI or SATA NVIDIA/LSI/AMD chipset drivers.

DOS Update Limitation:
The DOS Utility will not work with devices attached via SATA 6Gbps (SATA III)
operating in IDE mode.

Are you falling foul of any of those in the other machine?

The other PC was in IDE mode the first time I tried. I changed it to AHCI which gave me another error.

The other PC has a AMD 770 chipset. So.. I'm screwed on that one as well?

Looks like it. Windows Magician says it is compatible with AMD chipsets but then also in the limitations it says f/w update may fail on some AMD chipsets.

The DOS utility clearly states it does not support AMD chipsets.

The only avenue left if you cannot find a 3rd computer to use which does meet those limitations is to find a way to switch back to AHCI without breaking the RAID. I can't help you with that though because I know very little about RAID.

Fixed it. The trick is to put the SSD on a Non-RAID Sata port. On my mobo it was port 5 and 6. I swapped my Blu-Ray and SSD Sata cables. Firmware update went fine. No data loss. Only note is to check your bios Disk Priority after doing this. My Bios set my SSD to the bottom of the list. I had to set it back to the top to boot into windows.
