It is too much. Prices need to keep falling a lot for these to really make sense for most normal people. It would be nice to one day have 1TB of SSD storage for a good price.
Just bopught a 256GB 830 from the Egg for $216.99. I could get a pair for $433.98 totalling 512GB. $550 is not reaching me. The $400 number would raise my eyebrows.
Corky is right you can get two for less so not much reason to spend more to get one. Personally though I find $400 too much to swallow for a drive. I won't be happy till these SSD drives hit .50 a gig at all sizes. Thats going to be a while unfortunately.
I almost sprung for the Plextor at $400. Going to wait a bit since I'll have my new video card to play with anyway, and I don't feel like doing a new Windows install right now.
Amazon has had the 128GB Samsung SSD 830 for $99. So yea, the 512GB one should be $400, especially considering that you aren't buying 4x of everything else (casing, PCB, Controller, DRam, SMT compenents, ect.
OK - here's the sequel. I ordered the Samsung 830 256GB from Newegg. It was process and I got a UPS tracking number. That last last Tuesday. Looks like I have been "UPS'd" again! The SSD was to have been delivered today. I flagged the UPS guy down and he checked the tracking number. It had never progressed beyond the initial entry in Baldwin Park, CA. No delivery today, tomorrow, or ever. Something happened in Baldwin Park.
I contacted Newegg and filed a claim - they will issue a refund (faster than a re-order.) When that clears I will try again - this time I will pay a little extra to avoid UPS.
