Samsung 56" 1080p DLP HDTV $1399 @ Buy.com

Some friends of mine have a similar model from last year (65" tho) & the quality's great.

Buy.com link

This seems like a hot deal, given full 1920 x 1080p HDTV, HDMI inputs.

Black Friday will probably bring some impressive deals, but in the meantime for those who like this deal or don't wanna wait ...

Is there a QAM tuner (gettign unscarmbled HD signal from CATV) or not? I could not tell. But, wiow 1399 shipped for a 1080p unit.... I paid about twice as much for a 51" 720p DLP 2 years ago... I know this unit is being replaced but for 1399......

This HL-R5678W is actually a 2005 model.

Models with an "R" denote a 2005 model.
Models with an "S" denote a 2006 model.
Models with a "T" denote a 2007 model.

The 2005 models are 20 pounds heavier and 5 inches deeper (15.3" vs. 10.5") than the 2007 equivalent. And with the 2008 models being announced in January, there is some heavy discounting going on on the 2007 models right now.

The HLR5678W has a very slow color wheel compared to 2007 models. (10800 vs. 14400 RPM)
The HLR5678W has an early HDMI revision. While this might not be a huge deal to some, it's a deal breaker for me.

I'm sorry if this is seen as a thread crap, I'm only trying to provide additional information. If you demo this set and like the quality, then by all means buy it. The 2007 model is currently available at Vanns for a couple hundred more with free shipping and your choice of a free Logitech Harmony 550 remote, or a Samsung DVD burner.

I would avoid buying this set, as it's nearly 4 generations old at this point.

No offense taken, Mojo - I don't see it as a thread crap at all if you're providing helpful information.

My friends' Samsung is great, probably 2005 model as well, but if there's newer stuff out there for a similar price, I'd recommend the same. My brother-in-law just had his vintage Mitsubishi 50" rear-projection crap out, so he's looking at this as a replacement. (Ain't worth fixing, since he'll spend almost as much as he would on a newer, better set.)

Thanks for the info, I'll give him (& others) the heads-up. This still seems like a reasonable deal but I'll wait for Black Friday.
