Samsung 501lj SATA 1.5G->3.0G

I own a Samsung HD501LJ. Had it in an older PC with SATA I (1.5 Gb/s). Changed it with the SpeedSwitchsoftware tool provided by Samsung. Now I am trying to restore it back to it's original setting of SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) with the software provided. But it does not work, even if there is a message confirming the speed switch.
I test it in the older PC and the Mobo recognizes it even if it only works with SATA I. This test is about the only tool I have to check the link because there is no utility I know to test it.
Somebody else has this problem and found a way around it?
I miss so much the old jumper switch.

Have you tried Hitachi's Drive Tools?

I used that to adjust the AAM on those drives, but I don't remember if you can mess with the SATA settings.

Maybe your motherboard needs to be in AHCI mode to work for SATA 3.0gb/s?

My thoughts too. Also, enable SATA Native mode (but this might require a reinstallation of XP, or loading the proper drivers BEFORE you make the change, otherwise you'll hose the system.)

Wait...you are confirming the SATA mode using the older PC that does not support SATA 3.0Gb/s? See any potential problem there?

Confirm it in a PC that supports SATA 3.0Gb/s. Also check the jumper, it may have been set all along. This installation guide from Samsung shows the jumper setting for 1.5Gb/s but it may not be correct for all Samsung models.

SATA rates are not dependent on AHCI in any chipset.

I am trying to change the transfer speed because the newer Mobo supports 3.0Gb/s. But of course it has backward support to 1.5Gb/s, so it works anyway in this Mobo (GA P35 DS3P). But should not work on the 1.5Gb/s one. Is there any way other than this to check the transfer speed?

The model HD501LJ has not a jumper speed switch, to switch there is this switch software. And here is the problem, it does not seem to change. Or maybe with the patch it works on both speeds?

Plus I can't find a customer support contact email for samsung HDD. And the instructions in the FAQ are really confusing.

Is there a reason you cannot confirm the SATA mode on the new PC that supports 3.0Gb/s? The older motherboard is never going to indicate an SATA mode that it cannot support.

Also note the Samsung article specifies different file sets to use for switching 3.0 > 1.5 than are used for switching 1.5 > 3.0.

Kapaka, are you aware it makes very little to no difference, if your drive is set to 1.5 or 3.0?

Like most, that drive doesn't even hit the ATA specs, much less SATA 1.5 specs.

Much ado about nothing? 😀

installed HDtune it offers no info about the speed. However it does about a couple other Samsung drives.

Much ado about nothing?

Yes, I know that the maximum transfer speed is somewhere in the 80' mb/s and the burst is about 150 mb/s but it galls me that I can not change it back. :disgust:
