It's funny how quiet this thread became after you showed this review of the two monitors side-by-side. I have just a couple of things to mention:

Yeah, your friend got screwed. Hitachi does not make an 18" model with the 16ms response times. Believe me, if they did, I might have joined the LCD ranks by now.

Also, I did read your original post nowayout99, I was just being sarcastic. Honestly, I'm so attached to response times, I don't hardly even care about contrast and brightness. I have been trying to lately, but once the standard is set for the fastest response times, I'm unwilling to buy anything with a slower response.

Has anyone else noticed that the panel that Hitachi uses for the CML174 can only display 16 bit color? I was looking at the specs at AU Optronics website and noticed it can only display 262k colors.

I went the Hitachi's website however and it says 16.7 million colors on the main page for the LCD, but in the users manual it says 262k.

Can anyone confirm which is correct? I am also interested in one of these two LCD's and if the Hitachi can only display 16 bit color I think my decision has already been made.

Check out this link for colors http://compare.hitachidisplays.com/hitachidisplays/datasheet.jsp?type=in&id=853

I just received this monitor yesterday and it is great. Very Bright!!!!!!!!!!!
I am using the DVI connection and adjustments were limited so I installed Natural Color and it gives a lot of control of color depth.
The data sheet on the Hitachi web site says 16.7 color with FRC Circuitry. The color is excellent and the response time is great.
Would recommend this monitor to anyone.

His friend didn't get screwed.
Hitachi's 18" uses Hitachi's own panel.
There is no Hitachi panel with under 25ms.
The CML174 doesn't use Hitachi panel.

This has really wet my appetite. It's a shame there is not a 19" CML174 with a 16ms Response Time. The Samsung 172T looks better though IMO (aesthetically). I want, need at least an 18.1" screen as I'm used to my 19" CRT at least....

:D

Hi Everyone,

My apologies for holding the review off a couple days. We have had some SIS 655 and Barton stuff going live, but I can assure you it will go up after the Barton review. Thanks a lot for your patience!

Does that mean it's going to be posted this week? I have a dilema where I'm stuck with my 15" E-machine Monitor, OLD one, until I get a new monitor to replace my 17". I've been drooling over the Hitachi and Tomshardware gave it a good review, but I would like to see another one before I plunk down $575 for it.

anyone know?

Technically the Hitachi is a 256,000K color monitor. However the CML174 displays 16.7M colors using FRC . FRC stands for "Frame Rate Control". FRC is a method of interpolating more colors than a display can actually produce by quickly alternating between two colors. For example, gray could be created by alternating between black and white many times very quickly. You will never be able to tell the difference between the CML174 and a monitor marketed as a 16.7M color.

Many LCD monitors use FRC and are marketed as 16.7M color. Hitachi chooses to be honest about how the colors are created.

I believe i talked to you on the phone last week, If you indeed work for monitorsdirect.com.Is the reason your endorsing the cml174 in such a positive way because your a direct ditributor of hitachi(cornserstone) monitors and had a part in the design of the monitor? ;)
also is the 1 cent replcement plan/free shipping offer going to be around much longer? i want this monitor but i want to wait for the anand review.

I don?t believe that I made any product endorsements in this public forum. In fact I believe that is against the rules in most of these forums. What I say privately is another matter. I?m more than happy to endorse products privately you can find my contact information all over my web site.

What I did was try to clear some confusion on a specific feature of the CML174 with a personal observation.

Yes it is true that I work for Cornerstone / MonitorsDirect and now Hitachi Displays. Yes it is true that as of January 1, 2003 Cornerstone has taken over all sales, marketing, operations, support and logistics for Hitachi Displays U.S.A.
See this LINK

And yes it is true that MonitorsDirect is Cornerstones on line store.

No you did not endorse the cml174 on this forum, thats not what i meant.you did however endorse it over the telephone.you particularly said you liked the hitachi over the similarly spec'd planar 16ms lcd.Can i ask what is better about the cml174? im in the market to buy either of these 2 monitors and am leaning towards the hitachi because of the 1 cent 3 yr. replacement deal. Its nice to see product manufacturers in forums like this!

Both the Planar PX171M and the Hitachi CMl174 are very similar and both are excellent products. The Planar has a Pivot feature however the pivot software is sold separately. Spec for spec they are almost identical. I recommended the Hitachi mainly due to the price being $22 cheaper and we have free ground shipping on Hitachi LCD monitors.

Why is Monitorsdirect price higher on the Planer?
Computers4sure sell the planer for a cheaper price then the Hitachi (i believe it is 569)

We will never be the lowest price on every product, neither will Computers4sure. However we beleive we are the safest place to buy on the internet. Call technical support over at the other guys. Check out there ratings at Resellerratings Ask them if they offer 2 day advance replacement on Hitachi products. These are a few reasons why we may be a little more expensive.

As someone who as been working with the Hitachi/Palmar could you comment on its abilities with 2d applications?
Out of the two I prefer the Hitachi only because its comes with monitorsdirect warrenty.
However i heard some comments against the Hitachi viewing angles and brightness.
For about 500$ i can buy the 18" dell 1800fp. Do you have any idea how the two stack up against eachother?

Is the planar also a 256,000K monitor with FRC circuitry?
