Samsung 172T or Hitachi CML174 LCD?

I'm down to these two LCDs (big surprise, right?). Does anyone with hands-on experience with both the Samsung 172T and the Hitachi CML174 have a definitive preference in overall quality?

I know what the specs are on paper (172T with slower pixel response, etc), but at the end of the day, which looks better considering everything? Does either one have any specific drawbacks?

I was hoping AT would have had a shootout by now with these monitors in the lineup, but it hasn't happened. Cash is finally in hand and I'm ready to take the step. :D :D :D

At 17" I think the ball is in Hitachi's court. Although I like the Samsung design more (purely cosmetic). I've used both and I can say that I couldn't tell the difference, but gamers would want to go with the hitachi just to be safe.

I myself ended up getting a 19" so I went with the samsung 191T, shosting happens but I've noticed that with games you just have to spend more time tweaking it. If a game is running at a resolution like 1280x960 ghosting is all over the place.... if you lower it to 1024x769 it goes away to the point that its very tolerable. Each game I play, initially had ghostting problems but with some tweaking I reduced or eliminated the problem altogether.

I know 172T is slower; I'm hoping those with actual experience with both can share which they think is better in balance of ALL of their qualities.

For example, the Hitachi might be faster but does it have less accurate colors, etc? Or are they really that similar with exception to the pixel response?

Dunno about the Hitachi because I've never used it. I own the 172T though and it's excellent.

For movies I don't notice ghosting but then again I don't look for it. For gaming, well, I've only played games on it a couple of times and it was good but other than that I really can't comment. (I have looked at some cheaper LCDs though, and ghosting on those is instantly noticeable and VERY annoying. Not the 172T though.)

From what I've read, the casual gamers don't seem to notice ghosting on it, but the hardcore gamers notice some (although it is a lot less then with some other monitors).

The colour and brightness are excellent.

P.S. There is an AnandTech review to be posted on this monitor very shortly. I believe the author actually uses the 172T now.

Don't know if this is an option, but I thought I'd throw it out. If you wait for the proper combination of promotions/coupons, you could get the Dell 2000FP 20.1" LCD for maybe $100 more than the Hitachi. I own this monitor and it's simply unbelievable. The specs indicate 25ms response time, but I've never noticed any ghosting in UT2003, JKII, Max Payne, etc. I got mine for $787 shipped about three weeks ago. It might help you decide if you read the huge post about LCDs over at the Ars Technica forums too.

A free bump if nothing else. ;)

Hitachi - 16ms vs 25ms.

I've been oogling over this monitor since I saw a review of it in the UK (before it was available here and was called a different name). 16ms is sweet as hell. In case you need more comforting, here's a review of it at Neoseeker.com where they call it lots of good things. Just read this, this should seal the deal for you:

After firing up some games on this monitor, it became glaringly clear that the Hitachi CML174 is the best gaming LCD we've ever seen. No questions about it. Considering we've reviewed more LCD monitors than other websites, and we've seen a lot of really great LCD screens come through our offices, being able to thoroughly sweep the competition within the first few minutes is pretty amazing. Gaming performance is simply fantastic. Color reproduction is great and there is for the most part no pixel blurring that we can even see. Even compared to Hitachi's previous generation CML181 monitor, this new CML174 model is improved in the gaming department. We simply can't say enough good things about it.

Nuff said.

By the way, I'd suggest buying it here.

I did see the post. I didn't think he read mine. I know the paper specs; I'm looking for hands-on comparing and contrasting of the two. All the reviews I've seen are warm for both monitors; I haven't seen any direct comparisons of the two, however. 16 ms alone doesn't sell me (not a hardcore gamer). One could have less accurate colors, whch would be more obvious to me, or any number of issues that paper specs don't indicate. Hence asking for help from those that have seen, used, touched, drooled on, and licked BOTH. :) Whew, I thought I was clear by now. LOL.

Nuff said.

Is the albatron using the same screen as the 172T or something? The site doesn't have a review for the 172T otherwise that I could find.

i would stay as far away from the hitachis as i can...
My neighbor has an 18.1" hitachi LCD that he got from newegg for $900, also with the 16ms ratings...
First I did the 3dmark demo on it, which the LCD was using DVI(even said digital on the bottom right corner of the screen when it switched modes)
In the car demo, you can see the tailight of the car trail all over the screen, freaky!
next i played quake3 arena, which when i moved a little, the textures completely disappeared!!! The trailing was extremely bad... definately stay away!!

Thanks for the post... I saw that review, and I lost it, and I don't think I would have found it otherwise.

The only Hitachi 18.1 that Newegg sells is the CML181 and it's a 15ms rise and 15ms fall time...total time 30ms. I own the Hitachi CML174B and I can't see ghosting on anything. It does seem a little dim compared to other LCD's that I've used, but as far as ghosting, I can't tell it. The CML174 series is the only Hitachi's that are rated 16ms (total of rise and fall time).

That is what I thought too as you can see from my post above.

The Hitachi CMl174 has been ordered, can't wait

XBox, why did you get the ivory version if you really wanted the black one?

Thats just my point of view though

I am not waiting 2 weeks for a product when I can have it right now. I would have liked the black version to match my case but my keyboard and my other two monitors are beige/ivory so it will be fine
