Samsung 172T 17" LCD Reviewed + The Future of Samsung

dont know about you, but i aint about to pull out $500+ for an OLED display and then having it fade out in 2 years.

Well judging from the review I think I'm just going to go ahead and order a 191T (1900FP). Doesn't seem like there were any drastic enough improvements to justify the small difference in price between the two monitors, while the 172T is a full 2 inches smaller.

I was really hoping for a sooner release on the 192T. Even if it had been released sooner the improvements seem small to me, not to mention it will probably be extremely expensive to 192T compared to a 191T simply because who knows when Dell will change its product line over to 192T instead of the 191T. Doing a search around the net, the price on 191T is still pretty expensive when you can't order it from Dell, and you can almost count on the retailers using the new model number to justify a higher price tag.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

I am in pretty much the same position as you. I think I am also just going to go ahead and get the 191t. 17" is just to small for me, and I haven't heard of a better 19" then the 191t that doesn't cost significantly more. I don't think the 192t will cost all that much more though. I would think it will be around the same price or cheaper. Granted, I am talking about MSRP though, street prices will probably be around a grand for awhile. Heck, there are still a number of places sellign the 191t for $999.

But I just don't want to wait the months it will be before the 192t is out. ANd its more for non gaming stuff they anything. If it works out well for gaming great, but I am not holding my breath, and I have a number of nice 19" and 21" CRTs around the house as backups(since I do game alot). So I think this weekend or next week I'll just go ahead and get the 191t. Maybe today though, I don't want the Dell and if you order by today there is a thread in Hot Deals that has the 191t for just abit over $700 (like $716 or so shipped from J&R) with PM mail in rebate. Which sin't that much more then the Dell (usually $650 or so seems to be the good price on them when you catch the right sale).
 
The price on the 192T itself might not be higher then the 191T... my point was that the best deals for the 191T are from Dell on the 1900FP. The price is usually significantly lower then the actual 191T, when bought from an online retailer. The 1900FP won't necessarily switch over to the newer 192T any time soon, meaning you would have to buy the 192T at a higher price then a 191T (1900FP from Dell)... even if it is not released at a higher price then the 191T.

I think I explained that properly, feels like it came out weird though heheh
 
Ah, I see what you are saying now. The difference is not that great right now (between 191t and 1900fp)with some of the rebates out at the moment though. With the PM and rebate (that ends today) its under $720 for the 191t and the current Dell deal on the 1900fp (%10 off and a $35 coupon, that also ends today) its $689. So its under a $30 difference between the two. So if buying today I am definetly going with the 191t instead of the 1900fp. But the deals like that on the 191t seem to be few and far between (I dont know of any others) whereas Dell seems to have a pretty good sale once a wekk on just about everything, lol.

Either way though I don't think I can hold out for the 192t.
 
Ah well I just talked to a friend and apparently I convinced him he wanted a 1900FP when I was telling him why I was going to order one the other day, and he already ordered from Dell the other day for $674 shipped :Q

He said he found out he doesn't have the money though so I told him I would buy it off him for whatever he paid when it came it, problem is Dell must be churning out a ton of these things, he said the ship date is Feb 27 :|

Yeah, I noticed the ship time on 191ts and the 1900fp has gone up at a lot of places. At Newegg the 191t has been going in and out of stock every few days for the last couple weeks. Must be selling like hotcakes. On the other hand some vendors that have their quantity listed show like 500+ of them in stock, lol.
 
A full month before I get to use it, ouch 🙁 I was really looking forward to using it. This has gotta be the single largest purchase I've ever made for my computer.

Heh, by the time it arrives I might be able to order a 192T!

This month of waiting just leaves me more time to regret spending this much on a monitor hehe

btw, i have a dell 17 lcd, rebadged samsung. i love it.

Yes, but ironically with a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse. LOL.

Actually one of the reasons I bought the 172T is for its VGA/DVI dual input. I use the XP box which is under the desk with VGA (for now), and I use my TiBook (in the picture) with DVI. It's great having a laptop with DVI. 🙂

I also share the keyboard/mouse between both computers, as well as a number of Firewire drives (two of which are visible in the pic).

I'll start using the XP box more once I upgrade the thing to a 1.4 GHz Celeron Tualatin. Right now it's got a Celerymine 533A@800.

Great minds think alike. 😉 Actually, I bought a Samsung 19" 950p, not a KDS. I got the 172T in December.

So far it doesn't seem like too many people actually own the Hitachi, and nobody has both the Hitachi and the Samsung, so it's hard to get a good grasp on the comparative levels of ghosting on these two LCDs.

The Hitachi CML174B has a response time of 16 ms, the lowest around. I doubt you will be seeing any ghosting on that bad boy. Next week I am going to try to get my hands on the Hitachi CML174B. So I'll post a thread about it when I do get it and try it out.

The Hitachi CML174B has a response time of 16 ms, the lowest around. I doubt you will be seeing any ghosting on that bad boy. Next week I am going to try to get my hands on the Hitachi CML174B. So I'll post a thread about it when I do get it and try it out.

It would be nice if it's truly 16 ms. I'm still not 100% sure I believe it though.

The Hitachi and Viewsonic 16ms response result in some tradeoffs that may not be worth it

"Another caveat: These first fast LCDs use relatively simple twisted nematic (TN) pixel technology, which does not match the color quality and viewing angles of in-plane switching (IPS) and multidomain vertical alignment. So if speed isn't a concern, you might want to spend your display dollars on a slower but better quality LCD."

Yeah, hopefully the review will be up for the CML174 before I get my paycheck so I don't have to wait to find out if the 16 ms response time is true before I buy it.

 
The PC World article was enough to turn me off the CML174 - unless A'tech says differently. I'm not willing to trade 16ms response time (which doesn't completely eliminate ghosting) for static image quality.
