Using with Geforce2MX...

After reading so many great reviews about this monitor I bought one. Is this thing suppose to be usable at 1600x1200. Even at 1280x1024 the lower 1/3 of the screen is blurry. It about the same quality as my 5 year old Viewsonic P810 21".

Another very strange thing I've noticed that the higher than refresh rate the WORSE the image is. 85hz is the recommended rate, but 75hz is clearer, slightly. 100hz is horrible!

I was really hoping that after 5 years 21" monitors would have better quality control, and especially since this monitor is fairly expensive. It looks again like it's gonna be "monitor hell" where I have to pay for shipping back and forth until I get a good one.

Sounds like bad or poor RFI filters on the GF2 MX. It's a common problem. I recommend trying the monitor on another video card.

If it were the video card wouldn't it be blurry all over? It's just specific regions of the screen that are less than satisfying.

Yes! Since the video signal from the video controller card is an analog bit stream (x3) the entire signal passes through the RFI filters. This will affect the entire image on the screen not just certain areas. If the monitor is clear in some areas and blurry in others this is an indication of a classic monitor issue.

Gosharkss, thank's again for all of your help. I have been using my Samsung 950P for a couple of day's now and i couldn't be happier with this monitor. Your assistance and opinion's helped me buy with confidence.

Interesting ... I just put in a Geforce 2 GTS PRO 64MB and while the blurry areas are still blurry, they're not as bad. Overall image did improve, proving the secondary components do matter in a card.

Still.. the blurry areas are blurry... 🙁

Gosharks... you should write us a tutorial on how to open up a monitor and tune the sucker up. Make it easier for us to have a clear picure 😉

Did you play around with the controls? All GF2 video cards have bad 2D, doesnt matter if you use MX or GTS. If nothing works, just return it.

Sorry no can do! I will never recommend opening up your monitor.

Unless you are a trained monitor technician using the proper test patterns, video generators etc. odds are you will only make things worse. Most monitors these days use a microprocessor control through a service port to help the technician in the alignment process, the days of multiple potentiometers for every little control are long gone. Also most every manufacturer has a proprietary design so a generic, service guide would be very difficult to write.

Also monitors contain extremely high voltages. The main focus control is typically on the flyback transformer, 20 -40K volts. Avoid expensive hospital or funeral costs. Do not attempt to service a monitor unless you are trained and are comfortable working around high voltages.

I've opened up hundred of power supplies in the names of repair to save RMA hassle or to make the fans a tad less noisy. I would gladyly risk my life to fine tune my monitor.

Lets see, computer power supplies typically take 120VAC and a maximum of 240VAC and convert to 3, 5, 12 and 24VDC. Not even close to 20 - 40 Thousand volts inside a monitor.

I have been bit by a few monitors in my day, its no fun.

I have life insurance...

Come on you're no fun. I need to hack up a monitor somehow, and adding a blowhole to the top of it makes it not very resellable.

<< Will you put me as the beneficiary? I'll even tell you which wires to touch, See the big red one.

Yah I will set up a 2nd PC with a webcam as a webserver. But I need ftp access to about 10 megs of storage, and a fat pipe so I can upload a new image every 5 seconds.

I will touch the red one with my tounge on live internet coverage.

Edit - enable PM plz jimmy 😉
