Sams Club CEO a Bigot

She probably is a bigot and a racist. But you know what? So is pretty much everyone else.

Get over it.

Newsflash, a good majority of CEOs/rich people are bigots. In a capitalist economy the only way to get to that point is to step on a lot of toes, so naturally those people are assholes.

How about they just hire people that can do the job and not worry about race?

Because, generally speaking, research shows that diverse groups work better:

http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/insights/diverse-backgrounds-personalities-can-strengthen-groups
http://www.nber.org/papers/w12251
http://smallbusiness.chron.com/diversity-groups-teams-workplace-10998.html

etc., etc.

You don't just hire the first schlub who walks in the door that can "do the job." You hire people for fit, and for what they bring the table, especially soft skills. You also hire with an eye to filling the holes and weak spots in your existing team. Cultural background, ethnicity, and gender perspectives are part of that.

This is pretty basic HR stuff.

Of course, they can't just come out and say, "hey, we're only looking for ____ applicants for this job." So they recruit and fund outreach initiatives and K-12 programs, to sell the profession to tomorrow's potential hires, and make sure that there is a surplus of ____ applicants when they're needed.

If you want to be a quota hire as a white male, move to China.

I don't understand how someone could think this isn't being racist.

Would it be racist if she were a white woman complaining about a supplier being all black men?

That would be a problem as well because apparently the supplier isn't keen on hiring black women.

As CEO she has accountability to promote diversity within her own organization, not carte blanche to criticize the hiring choices of entirely different companies. That would be akin to me criticizing her for marrying a black man rather than a white woman because of diversity reasons. If she wants to make the business decision to base supplier decisions on their workforce diversity rather than economic concerns and face the resulting shareholder opinion then fine, but otherwise it's not her place.

She can criticize anyone she wants. It's called free speech.

Maybe we need to define what we're referring to as "racism" here.
I mean, I don't see anywhere that she's specifically calling them inferior or doubting their abilities based on the color of their skin. That would be a fairly clear-cut case of racism, IMO.
I think I understand where you're coming from, because initially I had the similar thought of "if it were a white dude making this comment about the other side of the table being all black guys, I'm absolutely certain people would be flipping shit", but I had to stop and think about it more.

Unless you're a Supreme Court Justice; then it's OK.
