Seen this at the Sam's Club in Gardena, California, today but couldn't find it on the website.

Averatec Notebook:

12.1" 1024x768 screen
Athlon XP 2200+
512MB RAM
60GB HDD
DVDRW Drive
802.11g

$899.99

Hot or not?

Been thinking about a notebook and missed out on the $499 BF Toshiba BB deal.

Search around and you may find it for $100 less. Sams is good because there is a 6 months no questions asked complete refund offer. Sams also offers a 3 year extended warrenty for about $80 and you will not find an extended warranty like that anywhere else. Check the averatech forums here to answer any user satisfaction questions you may have.

edit: I do not think you will find it for $100 less with the dvdrw.

I have an older version of this laptop. It has an xp 1600 in it. I've liked it a lot. My only complaint is that the backspace key is extremely small, but they fixed that in the next revision. Don't be afraid of averatec, it's a very nice machine!

i have done thorough research on averatecs....if its a 60gb model then its prolly only a dvd/cdrw but if its a 80gb only then it will have the DVD +/- RW drive...but dont flame if im wrong...because they coulda come out w/ a new model that i dont know about...in any case...CC had this same one for 899 when they first started to carry it...for such a lappy...the price is d@mn good...jump on it...and yea you're right gypsyman....899 is prolly the lowest you'll see this laptop for....until it eventualy goes down in price in a few months....i say jump on it...the price is specially good since at CC they had it for 1099 w/ 200 dollar rebate and the tax was killer...but looks like this is no rebate....
oh and DEF get the warranty...there have been a prob w/ a batch of averatec models...what happens is that if you put it in standby and then try to turn it back on...sometimes when you open the laptop up and try to put a pwd in...the keyboard or the mouse doesn't work....
in any case...if you have teh warranty you'll be golden....i guess even if you dont get the warranty...their 6month policy thing doesn't soudn too bad either(dont know much about it)....in any case....i seriously reccomend you get this laptop....im going to teh sams club tomm myself to see if they have the it here...and buying it if they do....its a damn good laptop

(i had baught the xp2200+,512MB,80GB,DVDRW model earlier but had to return it because i didn't have the money to pay for it then....didn't balance the checkbook right....wont happen again :) ) anywho...long post...i know....but def hop on it if they still have it....

I use an Averatec notebook everyday to complete the yearbook I am the advisor for. I would highly recommend this. Once my job is complete and I give the computer back, I am definitely going to buy me one!

Similar Lappy at Staples this week for $799.94 after rebate. I had to order mine online, and it will be here on Wednesday.

I have read great reviews of this brand laptop, with the majority of the complaints just about the keyboard keys. I'm waiting for it to drop in price a little @ staples then I'm going to get it.

Well, it was the Averatec that was in the Staples ad for the sales last weekend IThursday - Sat.) I am not sure if it was in this last weekends ad or not. THere was a $100 instant and then a $100 mail in. Came with the same specs as the one listed here, but with a DvD/CDRW drive. Seems to be a nice little laptop, but I will know more once I get it tomorrow!

Well, got her up and running last night. Pretty nice little machine in my opinion. THe only thing I do not like so far is that the software is all compressed on the CD's, so you cannot do a fresh install of just the OS and then install all the drivers and software that it came with. ALl in all it runs great! Fast little booger!

Anyone have any questions they want to ask about it?

I was looking at this yesterday at Sam's club to. I checked out the averatec website, and the one at Sam's does have the DVD+/- burner on it. It is only available at Sam's with the DVD burner on it.

this is the one microcenter had for $599 on Black Friday ($499 if u sign up for a Credit Card)-

my roommate got one and my major gripes on it are the crappy screen (not very bright and a fairly poor resolution), the crappy battery life (it says 3 hours but the most he's been able to get out of it is 2-2.5 hours max) and the AMD-M cpu heats up like a mofo to the point where it will literally burn your lap. It is a fairly decent laptop for the above price we got it for but for over $800... i dunno- centrino's are starting to hit sub $950 so everyone should keep their eyes out for that instead ^_^.

Well, I would have to say that I have experienced none of the above issues with mine. The screen's brightness is fine. It is brighter when plugged in than when running off the battery, but even that can be adjusted. Battery life - I cannot comment on this yet, as I have not used iit very much. My Dell with the 2.6 Celly ran alot hotter than this thing does. I guess for what we use a laptop for, it is a nice little laptop.

I saw it today. It 's a small thingy.
The price @Sams seems a little steep for 12.1" laptop

For anyone who goes to the Gardena Sam's Club. In the back where they keep the beer and close out items they have a lot of shorts that are clearanced. You can get them for about $5 or less (regular $12-$14). I bought a few for $5 each and one for $4.

Not a bad deal if you don't mind sluggish performance and only 2.5 Hours of battery life..

LOL, want to talk about battery life? I got my Sager NP5680 with a P4 2.6G and a 9600Pro and I get an hour, MAYBE a little more (but it's also designed as a desktop replacement). It's all about what's important to you...

This is a great laptop. However, I just got the 3250HX (same specs but w/ 80gig HD) at Circuit City for 899$ after rebates. So, it's not a bad deal but you probably could find a bit better if you waited a bit.

As for the laptop itself:
Pros:
Small
Well-Built
Fast
High quality components
Best price for its features

Cons:
The sound card is terrible, though a software work-around exists (www.averatecforums.com)
The battery life sucks (2.5 hrs) so just get a second battery, available online for ~90$
The keyboard is a bit small for some tastes, though I find it pretty decent for a 12.1"
The screen is a standard tft, not the reduced glare widescreen found on the Dell 700m and HP dv1000
The averatecs have been known to have other issues as well, but most have been resolved in the 3250HS and HX. check out www.averatecforums.com for a lot more info.

What I meant is that for 12.1" display, the price is high regardless of other components.
One can upgrade memory, HD, but they are stuck with the display pretty much...

Dude, the point of a 12.1" display on a laptop is that it is small. These laptops are like half the size of many other laptops. If you don't want a 12.1" display on a laptop that's fine, but personally, I buy a laptop for it's portability. If I want a big screen I'll work on my desktop. I want a computer I can carry and use anywhere. This is a pretty good deal for that kind of a computer!

Nobody cares why YOU buy laptops . YOU buy it for portablility. 14" laptop is portable enough for most people. 12.1" is very, very small. $900 for this is a no, no. And I keep thinking that.
