Same operating system on more than one computer

Does Microsoft and other operating system software writers have the capability to detect if more than one computer is using an operating system that is installed from the same CD/license ?

You've come to the wrong forum for help violating a software license.

To Markbnj and mechBgon: You can get licenses without purchasing additional media.

To wpshooter: Unless you have a corporate version of XP, then you will have to activate it, which means MS knows everytime you install the OS and whether or not it is the same hardware.

Ooops, my bad. I see the op said same cd AND license. OP, shame on you.

In fairness, the OP has not stated he has the intention of defrauding Microsoft/anyone else - he merely asked a question.

You will basically need to validate your installation of Windows. It will work for some time - I'm not sure how long - before it shuts down. Basically by validating, you have to contact Microsoft (by internet or phone) and pass them your license information to validate. They will then know you already have the program installed on another machine and not authorize your system to validated. I don't know if they have the power to revoke the other machines validation - or it just won't work the next time you try to use that license (if you reformated that original machine for instance).

There are programs out there that can bypass validation. This is legal and violating the software license. You will also loose the ability to gain access to Windows Updates and download new Microsoft software for Windows (IE7 or Spyware Remover).

In fairness, there is no other reason to want to know the answer to that question... ok there is one I can think of: if he knows someone who is doing this and wants to be able to say correctly whether they are in danger of getting caught.
