How can I stop the a folder from opening on my desktop when I start up Win98? I have closed the folder and shut the system down, then on startup the same folder open up on the desktop again. I have tried leaving a different folder open when I shut down and then re-starting the system, I get the folder I left open on the desktop (which it should) and I also get the same old other folder opening too. What can I check to try and stop this folder from opening at Windows startup?

Hold down the Left Shift Key (might be the left CRTL key, I forget) and shutdown cleanly and this should take care of the problem.

That did not work. The folder still opens at startup. Any other ideas on this? Were is the information kept in Windows to know what folder were open at the time of a re-boot. What happened was I installed new video drivers and had some trouble with the drivers not completing the setup, so I had to install the drivers again. When re-booting the system the folder I was running the video setup from keeps opening now. Everytime I start the system up that same folder keeps opening.

Check the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACINE / SOFTWARE / MICROSOFT / WINDOWS / CURRENT VERSION / RUN

Look for a registry key that has nothing in it, basically blank. If you see one delete it.\

Also check under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER / SOFTWARE / MICROSOFT / WINDOWS / CURRENT VERSION / RUN

check your startup folder...

start menu > programs > startup

if you find that the program is in there, then delete that shortcut... it'll prevent windows from automatically starting it up everytime that window starts up.

I somehow managed to cause the same problem on a Windows ME system. Sometimes it would open only one folder, but other times it would open a folder on each drive. I never could figure out what was causing this. There was nothing in the startup folder to account for it, and I didn't see anything suspicious in any of the *.ini files. I did not get into the registry. Fixed the problem by finally ditching ME. :)

You mentioned the folder was rage3dtweak. I don't know exactly what this is, but if you can get away with it, try moving the folder or renaming it then rebooting then moving it back or renaming back to the original name. After moving or renaming it, windows probably won't know where it is, so it won't open it. Hopefully it won't go back to opening that folder when you put everything back to the original name and place

Yes, I installed the rage3dtweak program along with the video drivers. It must be something with the rage3dtweak install that is causing the problem. I'll have to check the rage3d site to see if others had the same problem.

Thanks for the help everyone.
