Same color coolant needed to add?

Well the CEL came on on my mom's Camry earlier while driving, so I pulled off right away and checked oil and coolant. Coolant seems very low. The plastic reservoir is damn near empty. Even though Full is only marked about half-way up in the little reservoir, where it is at now is still below low. I turned the car back on and watched the temp gauge. It never went above normal (a little under halfway on the gauge), nor did the fans in front of the engine ever turn on. So I went a couple of miles to Walmart to buy coolant, as even though the car wasn't overheating, the level just seemed way too low.

I just read on some auto forums that you should only use the same color of coolant that is currently in the car. The kind in there is red. I didn't look or add the coolant I bought yet, but more than likely it is green. They also said that the red Toyota coolant is better and should be used. But the owner's manuals only indications on the type of coolant to use was that it contained ethylene glycol and that for best performance and corrosion resistant with the aluminum, just to make sure that. Well the coolant I bought at Walmart was just the 50/50 premixed stuff that is all over, but it does contain that ethylene glycol and says it is safe for the aluminum and such.

Do I need to have the red and/or Toyota coolant? I'm going to go check the coolant level again now that it has cooled down, and this isn't my own car so I'm not too familiar with it, but the level seemed too low. I'm thinking the CEL might have come on to warn that the coolant was getting too low, but that there is still sufficient amount of it in the radiator since the car stays normal operating temperature.

You need to get the same strength coolant or else it will screw up the coolant system. I'd say that your car is running 60/40 because your about the same climate as me; cold and snowy. Or the best bet is to take it to a mechanic to find out the strength.

How do you know it was temp that caused the CEL to come on? I would take it to a parts store and have them pull the codes and go from there. could be as simple as a loose gas cap.without knowing why the light came on, you're just taking a shot in the dark. you really need to find out first before you do anything,

If you stay with a good anitfreeze, like Prestone, you should be fine.
Just be sure you get the correct one. Like for GM you need Dexcool
compatible antifreeze.
