Samba problem.. mp3's skipping

I've got a problem with listening to mp3's from a samba server.. this happens with both of the samba servers in my house.
when listening to mp3 music from them.. it skips about every 5 seconds or so.. has anyone else had this problem?
I can't believe it to be a network problem since music from a windows server plays just fine.

both samba servers run on OpenBSD

Any ideas?
thanks

Ive never had a problem like that, but I dont usually listen to mp3s off of a samba share. If I get a chance Ill set one up to test it, but I wont be able to use winamp or anything like that.

Thanks.. what is really odd is I can play a video file that is several hundred megs without any hesitation but a 3-4 meg mp3 has trouble.. just doesn't make any sense to me.. It has to be something really simple and stupid that I'm just missing.

<< Have you tried copying the files from the samba server to your local drive and playing them there? >>

playing local files works perfectly.. just from the samba share is where I have problems.

Hmm, what kind of hardware is the samba box? Here is how my setup is :

P150 running Debian Woody and samba

all other nodes are either win98 or FreeBSD. Both OS's don't have any problems (except 1 of them I don't really use, so I don't know). Some nodes are hooked up to a 10Mb half-duplex hub, and some machines are hooked up to a 100Mb full-duplex switch.

I use winamp on the win98 machines (darn brothers don'ts like Sonique or Ashampoo), and the FreeBSD boxes use XMMS.

I would check your player settings very carefully. I play mp3 at work from my linux machines at home and have no problems. I've also played mp3's from the linux box on 2 other machines on my network at once with no skipping.

Seems to me I had this problem with a setting in winamp or media player. Sorry couldn't be of more help. Can't remember what it was, I just vaguely recall having an issue like this that was fixed with some setting in the player.

PIII - 667
512 MB RAM
OpenBSD 3.0 w/samba

I'll look around the players again for any settings that look like they might help. Thanks

dnetmhz - That's some nice hardware for a file server! I got no problems with my P150 and 32M and I have had 3 computers play music from it, and had people access the FTP server on it as well!

Let me know if you know if a player setting fixes it... I talked to someone who had the same problem.

Well I've looked at winamp and I don't see any setting that appears to relate to the problem.. such as buffer settings/etc.
Going to have to dig a little deeper...this is very frustrating.

I found this article which looks like it could apply..
http://www.tbeach.com/site/kb_ftp/1145009.asp

time to inspect the samba settings it looks like.. I'll report back tonight with any findings

That link looks interesting. Seems to me that it was couter intuitive like that link says. Something like the buffer had to be smaller or something.

You might try throwing an mpeg video on the server and see if it skips during playback. That may be able to tell you if it's transfers in general or mp3s specifically.

Have you tried other players?

<< You might try throwing an mpeg video on the server and see if it skips during playback >>

thats the funny part.. videos..even large ones play fine it's just mp3's...and yes I've tried winamp, music match, windows media player..all with the same result.

well that didn't work.. back to the drawing board.. I think I'm just gonna set up Apache:mp3

http://www.apachemp3.com

I know it's the easy way out.. but i don't have the time or the will to fight with this anymore..

so the score stands SAMBA: 1 - DnetMHZ: 0

oh well.. 😉

dnetmhz - Oh come on! Don't give up! I want to know what this silly problem is. Do you have any other computers you can hook up to the network? Does it have the same problem? The fact that it happens with mp3s only, and not movies I suspect the the client machine, not the samba server.

if you don't mind running esmith.org iso is around 250MB I think. It comes with a blade that installs an mp3 jukebox. Use it at work on our print server for IT dept.

I ran into that problem to with my Samba server when I first set it up... I ended up having to change the setting in the smb.conf file. If you need me to, I will check the settings that I am using and post them here. The config that you have is very close to what I am using. P150, 32mb ram, 1gb boot drive, and 30gb music drive. Running RedHat.

I havent gotten a chance to setup samba on any of my OpenBSD machines. Kind of had build problems recently and spent 2 days trying to fix them. Ended up removing the mean files from the Makefile :/

Happens on every client machine.. there are 8 clients on my network.. they all behave the same way.
