If you can get copy of invoice from repair after salvage and the maintenance history of the vehicle and all looks good that is a nice deal on that Z.

Start with a carfax report and go from there.

Spoke the seller and he gave me this website:
Tampa Company
I got the VIN and will check Carfax. I'll also call this company on Monday to see what info they can provide/documentation.

Every salvaged car has sustained "only" such and such damage. Was repaired beyond new condition, yadda yadda yadda. Stay away from them unless you are just buying a cheap bucket to get to point A to B. They have very little resale value, as well.

I've seen two vehicles on the road recently, one was a Durango, the other was a pickup I believe. They were going down the road practically sideways the frames were so bent. It was crazy looking.

Most of the time, if a car gets rear ended, they will call it salvage. It would be repaired to perfect. I have a car like this and no probs at all. It still had a warranty on it for oil changes and stuff. Salvage cars save you money and they are a good value depending on the damage.

not saying you should buy the car, but salvage could also be a theft recovery, no matter how much or how little damage.

Seems fishy how? Its been wrecked, if it were the same price as other 350Zs that were not wrecked it would never sell. Apparently the associated trouble with salvaged cars is worth 8k here (considering equivalent year 350s are going for 19k).

Do you know anyone who is friends with a car dealer? If so, go to an auction with them and spend 2-5k (depending on your budget) and get an import. A dealer will usually charge a couple of hundred bucks, but you will easily sell it for around your total purchase price when you get out of your credit-cautious stage.

I looked at that craiglist link... it says "This car is proven to run without any mechanical problems that are typically associated with a salvage vehicle"

The way he says typically associated... sounds like a bit of a get out clause to me, i dont know what 'typical' mecanical problems with a salvage vehicle are but i'd be wary of that, sounds like he's covering his ass...

I wouldn't go for it. Just suppose that the owner is telling the truth and there are no major problems. When you're done with it and want to sell it, no one's going to want to buy it. Honestly, I know a guy with a car that drives great but has a salvage title, and he's been selling it for three years with no luck. I was looking at buying it and he was willing to go down on his asking price from 11k to 7k, but I decided not to take the risk. Not many people do.

Meh, I'd buy it. I've had good luck with the salvaged cars I've bought. Better than the cars I've bought retail, in fact.

350Z is a sweet ride, I have always wanted one also. Dude, at 11k you have lotsa choices. If the story takes more than 2 sentences to complete. The story is a story.

Thanks for all the info guys. I did run a Carfax report and it stated that the mileage could not be confirmed on the vehicle, that either the odometer was tampered with or had some invalid information.. So should I assume that engine was replaced?

Either way its a no go, not even if it passes inspection.

Yeah, it sounds way too fishy. You're better off just buying a cheap, reliable econobox and keeping it until you can afford a nice car.
